Anyone know of a cheap alternative to Davidoff Special R?

I would like to find an everyday cigar that tastes as good as the Davidoff but only costs around $3-$3.50 a stick at a box price. Thanks and anyone that can help I appreciate it.

Thanks Clampdown. I put a post up about Private Stock but I did not get much response. I am also currently seriously contemplating Gispert Maduro and La Aroma de Cuba.

For the price, the Oliva Grand Cameroon's are amazing sticks. Well worth a purchase and a try. Plus the churchills are great for golf, they dont roll off the golf cart when you are searching for you ball in the woods. :D

You could try a Griffin's Fuerte. I've only had one. It's not quite the same as a Davidoff R but the brand is a Davidoff brand, so it has some similarity, same great constructions, but is a bit cheaper. Looks like you would pay about $6 per stick.

I did not care for the Griffins but Edge Lite may be a good idea, also I have heard that La Aurora and Occidental Reserve are decent smokes for the price.

did you have a Fuerte or regular? They are very different.
If you already had a Fuerte, ignore me :)

I want to say that it may have been a regular. I believe that it was a 2000 or 3000 tubo but I can not be sure as I have slept since then. I got it at Duke City in Albuquerque when I was travelling and he only had 3 different sizes.

I recently ordered a bundle of 3x3 tubos to give a shot. They are made in the same factory as Davidoff but supposedly the wrapper wasn't pretty enough to be on a Davi. I am not sure if they are long or short filler or how the taste of the blend will compare. Unfortunately they are on backorder at the store I ordered them from. Could be a good sign? If you run into them at a local shop they would be worth a shot, around $2 a stick retail I believe. If I remember this thread when I smoke one of them I will post comments.

TXMatt, if you remember me after you try the tubos, PM me and let me know what you think. Thanks,

The occidental is going to be mild like the special R but it lacks the complexity that I find in many of the Dav's. Although for about $2 a stick... that is a hard to beat price. The Griffins is actually made by Davidoff as is Private stock. Private stock are actually davidoff seconds so the tobacco is virtually the same. The Griffins are not however and this is probably why it tasted different. You mentioned something about Gispert. I REALLY like the Gispert natural line. It's smooth, Mild and complex. Never had a burn problem with one of these. If you haven't given them a shot, definitely worth a try and they also run very reasonably at around $4-5.

Thanks Ninja, I just had a Gispert Maduro Robusto and really like it. I think that I will give the Private Stock Long Filler a try. I do not think that I will try the Medium filler until I see if I like the LF. Appreciate the help.
