Ashton VSG Corona Gorda

Mr. Ed

A horse is a horse...
Initial Impressions: This was nice looking corona gorda here with a dark Ecuadorian wrapper. The wrapper had some small bumps here and there, but was free of any blemishes and other imperfections. This cigar gave off a faint pre-light aroma.

Pictures: These are thumbnails. Feel free to click to see some hi-def pictures

Smoking: This cigar began with a very nice draw, but got plugged somewhat about half-way through the smoke. I had to cut off the head a little there. The burn was nice and even throughout the whole smoke, no adjustments were needed. The burn was also very nice and cool. There were no issues with the wrapper cracking or coming undone either. This seemed somewhat tightly rolled and except for the draw issues about half-way through the cigar was well constructed.

Taste: This cigar was full-bodied and smooth, no trace of harshness here at all. This is not a cigar that I would have on an empty stomach. The taste began with a very full tobacco taste with some sweetness, the finish was peppery and spicy and stayed on the palate for a moderate amount of time. After it was ashed and the draw was fixed (the fifth picture) the flavor began to develop some coffee-like characteristics and had some sweetness mixed into it as well. The finish became deep and sweet and stayed on the palate longer, the spice all but disappeared here and was pretty intermittent from here on out. For the rest of the smoke the cigar retained a very full tobacco flavor with some coffee-like taste mixed in and the finish remained very full.

Conclusion: A very solid cigar here, however, this is not the first time that I've had some draw issues with the VSG, they seem to be somewhat tightly rolled. The taste was very smooth despite the fullness of the cigar and was very pleasant. This smoke didn't exactly WOW me, but was still pretty darn good. The value on these is pretty adequate I would say, a lot of people really love these and they are somewhat difficult to find online (at least in my experience) and are a B&M type smoke. I bought this one at the local B&M for $9 about 3 months ago. I would probably keep two or three of these in my stash, but probably not keep it in the "regular" rotation. Still, a very good smoke.

Final Grade: 9/10, A- on the Mr. Ed scale

Thank you for reading :ss

Thanks for the review and great photo's Mr. Ed. I'm tending to lean back now towards purchasing smaller rg cigars again, and the 5.75x46 Corona Gorda size is a classic favorite...:ss

I had a couple of the larger ones. I think "illusion" but dont quote me on that.

I noticed that draw was a little tight until they warm up on the last one. Great flavor when they are burning good but a little inconsistant on the construction.

Revisiting this review where I claimed the draw was awesome:

It was my favorite cigar for a while after that review... until I tried a Tat.

Anyway, nice photo documentation. Great Cigar, great review... rg bump!

:tpd:

These days whenever I find a blend that I like I almost exclusively buy corona or corona gorda vitolas (some exceptions being DPG stuff and the Tat SW), for some reason I've always enjoyed that size more than any other.

Yes, I had a tres mystique one time (the petite corona 4 3/8 X 44) which was plugged to high heaven, luckily someone had a draw tool, otherwise I would have tossed the damn thing.

Great review and thanks for the Pics, I have a box of those from '06 and a box of the belicoso's from '07 that I won't touch until another 5 years. You will not believe a 5 y.o. VSG.

Thanks for the nice review! This has been one of my favorite smokes for a long time. Just broke down a few months ago and bought a box. :)

Just had 3 of the VSG Corona Gorda delivered on Friday morning. They are sitting in the humi resting and awaiting the right moment to fire them up.

Great review with excellent pics - but I haven't had the same experiences with the VSG's. The few I have had were good, but did not warrant the price uplift at the time. Lets face it, $9.00+ for a cigar (plus tax) should provide a knockout experience. I did enjoy the VSG, but I felt I could get a better "premium" Dominican flavor profile from an FFOX, Hemi / Hemi Maduro, or Davi Millenium. Many of the Nicaraguan lines delivered a better flavor slap than the VSG as well.

However, I do have about three VSGs left in one of the humis. I will fire one up over the 4th and report back. Its probably been about a year since my last VSG. I feel inspired now!

Mr. Ed, I seem to be bumping into you all day long in the forums. Earlier, I went to bump you for something, and it said I needed to spread the love. Now, I just realized why, after finishing up the very same smoke in this excellent review!

I'm quickly seeing Ashton as one of my favorites, which I suppose was only a matter of time before a newbie would stumble on a royal treat, given the willingness to pay for it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, after buying at Casa Fuente, toting it home in my carry-on, giving it a quick rest, and BOOM! I loved it.

Cheers to all brothers on this 4th of July WEEKEND! I know you're all pulling out some special ones on days like these.
