Bead problem..WTF!

It's not really possible to overload with beads. By the nature of the beads, they will only raise the RH to there specified level. If you have more beads than required, it would only extend the amount of time between when you need to rehydrate them.

Yes it is....fully charge 3lbs of beads in too small of an environment and the RH% will rise above the stated RH% of the beads since the beads cannot absorb the excess humidity. That's the whole point of having the right amount of beads per cubic foot.

Here's the tip from Heartfelt's site:
Calculating the amount of Heartfelt Humidity Beads needed for your humi:

Measure the depth, width and height of you humi (example is 24” depth, 36” wide and 48” height)
Multiply the three:

Large Humidor

24x36x48=41472 cubic inches

Multiply this by .00185185 (ounces needed per cubic inch); 41472x.00185185=76.799 ounces

Divide this answer by 16 (ounces in a pound); 76.799/16=4.79

You would need 4.79 pounds of Heartfelt Humidity Beads for this humi.

Here is another tip from the Heartfelt web site.

Here we offer the 65% Heartfelt Humidity beads in a 1 pound. 1 pound will humidify up to 5 cubic feet of space.

Important: You can use more Hearfelt Beads in your humidor than the minumum amount recommended. The additional Heartfelt Beads will give you more moisture storage and help the humidor recover quicker when it has been opened. The extra Heartfelt Beads will also help compensate for seasonal changes and a less than perfect seal on your humidor.

You should never completely charge the beads (make them all clear). When you do so they loose the ability to absorb RH. I believe Viper recomends somewhere in the area of only 70% of the beads should be clear when charged, that way you have a two way humidification.

You can also read the Humidification Beads: FAQ thread to read the same thing in Vipers own words. It's over 600 posts long, and many of them are dealing with this very question.

I believe the point of the calculator is to make sure you would have the minimum required. Too few beads and they wouldn't be able to keep up with the humidor.

I hope this helps.

Well, Ive got about 3lbs of 65% beads from heartfelt in my 150 qt cooler. Hygro is reading 73%. I have salt tested it TWICE this week. My desktop humi is chillin at 68%...WTF! Could I have possibly been sent 70% beads? I did NOT wet the beads when they arrived so they are NOT saturated..

It takes some time for the moisture to work its way out of the cedar and the cigars themselves, it will get there. Patience my friend.
