Cabaiguan Guapos

Munkey

Howler Monkey
Origin: Nicaragua
Length: 5 5/8
Ring Gauge: 54
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua

Torched this lovely stick 8 days after arrival. Clipped a good part of this triple capped head (verging on too much). The pre-light draw almost kept me from lighting this cigar. So good. Toasted the foot and found the 54 ring gauge easy to light. The first draw almost made me drop the stick. Monster pepper and spice. More than any other cigar i've had. Wow. This is going to be interesting.

At the .5 inch mark, the pepper mellows nicely. The ash is burning white at the full inch. Lots of zesty flavor in this, but the pepper is mellowed away. 2/3 the body goes from mild/medium to medium full but doesn't stay.

At the halfway point the cigar does a rice krispy snap, crackle, pop and I wonder if I am smoking a beetle or fly neatly rolled into the cigar. a few puffs later and a notice a tiny crack in the wrapper. A couple more puffs and the crack becomes a canyon. Grrrr... overhumidfied, this stick must be rolled fairly loose, because the draw was fantastic.

The final third had a strange taste I couldn't identify. It wasn't bad, but I almost put the cigar out. I let it cool a bit thinking I had been smoking it too fast. The odd flavor continued, but wasn't detracting. I also noticed the flavor was a bit creamier.

Summation: I can see why some like this as a breakfast cigar, but I like it for a relaxed evening stick. It's too bad they are discontinuing this size with the release of the 3 smaller sizes, but I'm looking forward to trying each of them. I think I'll drybox them before smoking though as this stick was obviously too wet for my tastes. I'd definitely smoke this again and could see it in regular rotation in my humi if buy before they are all gone.

Overall rating 8.2.
Price $11 (Free - bombed by Dan @ New Havana)

I smoked my first last night, and thought it was a fairly good cigar, but not for $11. Thought it tasted pretty similar to what you described, but mine was constructed well. :)

I didn't mean to imply poor construction, the inside was just not acclimated to the lower RH I have in my humi. The binder didn't tear, just the wrapper. And was able to smoke through it. I can't debate price, I haven't tried enough cigars to know, so I'll take your word for it.

I think it is a good cigar, but for $11 you should be smoking a great cigar!

Been meaning to try one of these for awhile now, can never seem to find any locally damnit. It sounds like it would be right up my alley too.

Agreed - I tried two of the Guapos, and while they were good, they werent $11.00 + godawful tax good. I was really hoping that the Guapos would exceed my expectations given my like for the Tatuajes, but they didnt. Some of the Tatuajes have a better bang-for-the-buck ratio in the Nicaraguan sourced space.

I just smoked one of these while watching a few episodes of "The Shield" (BTW, "The Shield" rocks). Good cigar but not $11 worth. This one was a gift though, so dang good at that price. The Guapo reminded me of a Tatuaje without all the strength. Was still a full-bodied cigar though and I prefer the Cabaiguian over the Tatuajes which are a little too much for me.

Tried my 1st of these last night. Experienced a tear on the wrapper as well. I agree with the price issue as previously stated. I have come to really enjoy the Tatuaje line, and was waiting for something a little extra to happen with this stick that didn't materialize. I have more I'll let sit, and be sure to dry box before trying next time like I usually do now.

I love these even for the price. One of the few large RGs I really like. I can't wait for the new vitolas though, come down in price and size will be great for me.

Smoked my first (and not last) one of these a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was a very good cigar and fortunatly had no wrapper issues. I plan to order the Guapos sampler from New Havana as soon as I have some room in my humi.
As for the price, I don't think it is out of line as I have smoked more expensive cigars that I did not like as well. Just putting in my:2.

These are really good! I bought one at a B&M deal and really liked it. I'd buy them in a second if a good deal came up. Full price is a bit out of my price range.

We just got these in the shop I work at. They look beautiful!! I cannot wait to light one up and give it a try.

Edit: We received the Guapos RX

If you do get one that isn't well constructed, thank the super thin wrapper ;). It's a great stick though, it has a lot of that great flavor the Tats give without being too strong.
