California- Don't be like Alaska- No on 86

Up here the tobacco tax is 120%

A Sancho Panza Quixote, what many would call a two dollar smoke costs $8.00 up here.

I am hard pressed to find any cigar for under 7 dollars at the local B&M. I am a supporter of local business, but the cost of a cigar due to taxes makes it hard.

Don't become like us up here. The tax is aimed at cigarettes, but it will impact cigars the most because you can still order cigars online and avoid the tax.

Local tobacconists are hurting while the tax gives out of state vendors a huge advantage.

Just wanted to remind you all to stick to your guns and get out the vote.

Don't be like Alaska.

thanks for the warning...

the prop is written badly... there are tons of reasons to vote it down even if you are anti-tobacco (although there are probably not many of those types here). Hurting local B&M's, as you mention, is just one of many reasons to vote No. Lets just hope that voters can see thru the obfuscation.

I just got into cigars a couple months ago and was shocked when I stopped by the B&M for the first time.

Last time I was in a cigar shop was about 15 years ago and I was expecting to see prices like I remembered.

It was a shocker for sure. Till then I was unaware that the cigarette tax had an impact on cigars.

Cigars from local B&M's here in CA already seem to cost twice as much as other states (not Alaska obviously). I don't see how these shops could stay open if 86 passes. But most people don't read the propositions - they just regurgitate the propaganda from the stupid ads on TV...

I've been telling everyone I know to vote no. Just going to have to cross my fingers. I thought of even going down to the B&M on Tuesday.

Ive bee telling everyone I know to vote no on it as well. I am going to hit up my local shop to have a smoke.

It will pass like all of that legislation does..Last year the Gov.of Mn signed a health care impact fee on tobacco products that raised the tax on cigars about 100 % and no one even got to vote on it.. My only way of getting even is I am voting for the democratic challenger on Tuesday,,first time ever voting dem.. The state could care less who they put out of business. Get ready for this in all 50 states in the next few years and all but a few a few B&Ms will be out of business,,Then they will go after then internet sites like they did for on line poker players.

I'm sure there are other reasons to vote for him, but voting strictly as retribution on this one issue seems a little rash, but I understand the sentiment... I've always been registered GOP, but I've voted for dems and indies before... I almost voted Kerry during the last go, 'cause I was not happy with the Republican choice... Sorry, policy withstanding, I just think the guy is dumb and it reflects badly on this country to have him as the head honcho, IMHO... if the Dems didn't put up such a lack luster guy in '04, I would have voted for a Democrat in a heartbeat... Ooo...got a tad off subject...

vote No on 86!

Face it smokers are so outnumbered these days they are :hn

While I was slumming for some donations of $'s in my own small community to buy cigars for the troops I was told by one person "cigars are bad for them". Yeah like IED's that turn their insides outside are better for them.

Smokers are an endangered species and it is only going to get worse.

Just remind the folks that once tobacco is outlawed, they will go after something else that is not healthy.

Fatty foods, caffiene, sugar, energy drinks, take your pick.

I'd head to your B&M's today just in case, boys. I have my fingers crossed for 'ya; as a citizen of nearly 300% tobacco tax, I can empathize.:hn

Damn... I would have thought Alaska would be a lot more libertarian.

Another freedom falls to marching totalitarian leftist health gestapo.

Hey Bilder nice to know CS reaches all the way to AK - I think I may me moving there within the next 2 months. There are a lot of positive things I'll take in trade for Alaska'a high tobacco tax...namely a bunch of microbreweries, fishing, hunting, snow, decent commute, etc. (well the commute to the NS may not be very good, but at least I won't be driving).
