Must be the day to review Toranos. Coz77 had a nice review on the perfecto and lots of thumbs up from other gorillas. So, on to the Toro.
I received the CT Exodus 1959 Toro from DJM in the "Newbie pif-new but not improved " PIF.
Size: 6 x 50
Shape: Toro
Wrapper: Honduras
Filler: Hon., Mex., Nic.
Binder: Honduras
I bought a box of Torano Signatures and, though the cigar is not among my favorites, did admire the quality of construction. The Toro looked very well constructed with a vein free wrapper. I used my punch and the head stayed intact. After toasting the foot, the cigar lit well with a nice volume of smoke.
The burn was pretty good for the first third. I got the fragrance of perfume from the burning end. The first third was a real "yawner" for me. The taste never changed. No coffee, pepper, spice, coffee, leather, etc. I started out pretty disappointed.
The second third started to get more interesting. The perfume aspect diminished and there was some "nuttiness" starting to assert itself. Nice change of pace. The burn turned a little irregular and from this point on, I had to touch up the burn several times. This doesn't bother me. As a smoker of Maduros, some with really tough wrappers, I'm used to doing touch-ups. Because of the touch ups, I'd have to say that construction wasn't as good as I thought it was in the beginning.
I really like the last third. I didn't feel this was a very "complex" cigar but there were some subtle complexities and they did increase during the last third. If the whole cigar smoked like this, I'd buy some. I never did taste any coffee, pepper, coffee or leather. There was a bit of spice in the last third. The last third was so good that I nubbed it. The nub did start excreting some tarry ooze but the good flavor held up right to the end. The cigar lasted 2 1/2 hours.
I enjoyed the cigar but not enough to buy a box. It's a higher quality cigar than I'm used to smoking as was the "Signature" but a bit too mild, refined & classy for me. Given a choice, I'd smoke one of my favorites in my sig or the No. 500 Tampa Sweetheart maduros before I'd buy one of these.
