Cigar Magazine Comparisons

I really like Cigar magazine and I had a 2 year subscription. I moved and tried sending a couple emails to their address listed on the website for address changes. Unfortunately, the last 2 magazines never came to their new destination. Too bad because I always found that magazine to be a good read.

I picked up Smoke, Cigar Magazine, Cigar Aficionado, and Cigar Press for a recent trip... So far I enjoyed Smoke's articles the best and Cigar Press's reviews. :ss

Was anyone surprised by any of the results? Was anyone tempted to purchase another magazine other than those you've already tried?

With 9 print magazines out there, we obviously need to take our time and carefully consider our choices.

For me, Cigar Magazine has been my favorite. I have to admit, I have had some personal problems with Lew Rothman, so I won't purchase or subscribe to Cigar Magzine in the future, even though I think it's a good magazine.

I think Cigar Press has good potential but I'm not tempted to purchase a subscription yet.

ECCj is not something I've considered, just because I think it's a waste to have a bi-lingual publication when I can't read a word of German.

What do you think?

Doc

Doc,

ECCJ is the very best magazine out there, I promise! It's well worth the $45 or so for a two year subscription, which is 8 issues! Yes, it is a bi-lingual magazine, however, it's very well done. Also, you may be confused, as it is not published in German. It is published in Dutch & English. It's full of cigar related news & articles, with great cigar reviews, both NC and Cuban. The pictures are amazing and the magazine averages about 120 pages an issue. It is 95% Cigar related and 5% Pipe related. I've been reading it for 3 years now, in fact I just recently renewed my subscription for two years.

Nope, it's most assuredly auf Deutsch (Deutsch means German not Dutch). I speak and read German so I buy the magazine to brush up on my language skills and learn about cigars at the same time.

ECCJ has been my favorite as well. Great job Doc!

Thanks for correcting my mistake! All these years, I thought it was Dutch, not knowing anything about either the Dutch or German languages!

Thanks for the great review.

I have heard much good about the ECCJ. My only complaint regards the availability. I've never been able to find it. I suppose this has more to do with the B & Ms I frequent than the publication itself. Anyways, this review has cemented the idea that a one-year subscription would be worth the try.

I don't think ECCJ is available at any News & Magazine Stands, Book Stores or B&Ms within the USA. I have always ordered online. Here is one link that may help: http://www.magazinesworld.net/P/European_Cigar_Cult_Journal,779.html

I bought ECCJ last week at Barnes and Noble. They usually shelve the cigar mags on the bottom shelf under the cooking mags.

A great idea and thank you Doc. ECCJ is my current favorite, behind that would be Smoke and then cigar magazine and cigar press are I guess tied for 3rd. Cigar Magazine has great articles but the review section is heavily populated with certain cigars that i have no desire to smoke.

I personally dislike CA as a magazine, and haven't read many others because until recently they where hard to find and I didn't want to sub. So I look forward to your reviews.

I've always wanted to do my own magazine, but never was sure how.

I don't do magazines for that very reason....it's all ads.

For my other hobby, guitars, I am subscribed to a mag, but only because the company I'm an avid follower of gave us all free subscriptions last March...so I took them up on it. That mag was actually pretty good, as it showed a musician gear they never heard of before, but it was still a giant marketing schtick. I'll kill the subscription at the end of the free period, as I've never heard a single bad comment about any piece of gear, including one I personally own and know the flaws of.

This seems to be the problem with many mags...playing "well, we need the ad dollars"....guess what? If you are dead honest with your reviews, you might be able to charge buku bucks per year...people will pay good money for good information. On the other hand, people won't pay much if anything for bunk content.
