cigar puncher vs cutter

Bucket O' Fun
i was just looking for opinions and differences between the two
I
was looking at them on taboocigars and i think i like the nice clean hole that a puncher creates...but i A) have no idea how it works (besides the obvious "it punches hole in cigars") and B) i've already got a cutter that came in one of my samplers

Opinions and discussions are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED :)

I really like using the punch on a large RG cigar... especially is the head is a little flat. Very nice cut and smokes like a champ. :ss

For a torpedo or a smaller ring guage, I use my Palio or Xikar.
That's how I roll.
:r

Sorry for the n00b like behavior, its been a real reoccuring thing lately with the revival of a thread that was two yrs old and all...:sl

so i read through those threads you gave me, and the gen consensus for the most part tends to stray away from punchers b/c they can sometimes cause tobacco backup (sumtn like that)

my next question is does the quality of the cutter make that big of a difference when it comes to cutting them, for instance i've got the .99:2 freebie that comes with a CI taster, and i cut myself recently with it (dumb story dont ask) so i know its relatively sharp...but so many ppl seem to be raving about the palios..what gives, i hear the have a lifetime warranty so thats a plus,...but other than that im stumped

Do the better cutters give more of an ability to shave the end of the cigar? I'm a lil confused as to why so many ppl are spending 30$ on a cutter?

my understanding is a .99c cutter is good for 2-3 solid cuts, but nicer cutters will be good forever. i personally use a punch and love it, but i also have a savoy double blade for things like short stories and hemmingways, as well as torps of course. its preference

What kind of puncher do you have? cost?

I have a cheap punch on my key ring for impromptu herfs.

A cheap double blade in my Jeep for impromptu herfs with figurados.

And a Palio at home for EVERYTHING.

I like a punch cut but sometimes I damage the head of the cigar, any suggestions regarding technique or better quality punch cutters?

Regarding cutters, the Palio is fantastic. I myself cut every cigar I can, though I do carry a punch around on my key ring. I have never used one, but I have heard the AVO Twist is simply unbeatable when it comes to cigar punches. It has two different blade sizes which seems like it could prove itself quite useful.

i just use my lighter, i think it was $20

havent had a problem with the wrapper ripping since i've gotten it down. basically i lick the cap, then gently twist back and forth with pressure until it cuts, then just finish it out and pull it out. works for me

have tried v's, dbl blades, and punches. it's a matter of what you like. for me i use my xikar xi on everything but the lfd chisel shaped cigars which were made to be punched.

I like using a cutter.

The amount of smoke you get from the cut you make is just perfect for me.

Sometimes punching causes alot of build up around the hole that does not happen with a cutter.

Exactly what I was going to say. I really just prefer the cut of a Xikar or Palio to any punch.

Thanks for all the replies guys... Think I'll just use my .99c cutter till it starts squishing my sticks.... Then I'll get a Palio!

Have both, prefer cutter, only use the punch on small rings. IMHO, if the punch is used on too large a ring it is like sipping coffee thru a straw. Next B&M visit I want to give the wedge a try. Although, just beginning to get the cutter down, not sure what I could do to a cigar with a wedge. :2

Something I noticed, all of these threads have a statement (or a few) like this one:
Sometimes punching causes alot of build up around the hole that does not happen with a cutter.

Just for the record, I just calculated that I have used a punch on about one thousand cigars a year for the last few years, and I have never had this problem, unless I screwed up the punch.

My old shop teacher always said that it's a poor workman who blames his tools. A punch, used correctly, has no problems with goo around the hole, unless, I guess, you smoke a cigar that puts out a lot of goo, a cigar that I never smoke. So for you noobs out there, don't let the bad experiences of a few stop you from trying things, especially things that some of us believe have enhanced our herfing for a long long time.

IMHO, just my :2
