Cigars + active sports = ?

I've discovered over the past couple months that I really enjoy cigars.. which has led me here..

However, I'm a very active person.. having played pro soccer for the past 6 years... Although I'm retired now, I still enjoy running and have future plans to occasionally participate in charity runs.. and possibly a triathlon or two.. I haven't really noticed much difference over the past couple months, which leads me to my question - Is there anybody out there that enjoys the best of both worlds? Obviously I expect a slight effect on performance.. but do I need to put this new found joy off for a couple years.. ?

Thanks! - mo :tu

I'm pretty active as well and as I've gone further down the slope over the past year I have noticed no impact at all. I smoke only about 4-5 cigars per week but I don't inhale. I don't see how this could impact your lungs in any noticeable way as long as your are not inhaling.

I was going to put 'lots of burns' as a solution to your equation but I am relieved that you don't smoke DURING active sports.

:tpd: I'm pretty active too and the biggest problem I have is being able to smoke while participating in sports. :D

if you don't burn through a box a day you should be fine, i bike and skate and smoking cigars has made no difference for me

I'm currently training for a marathon and smoke cigars. I don't smoke before the day before a long run (except once) and usually only smoke on Sat and Sun because its after my Sat long run. If you smoke in a well ventilated area and aren't inhaling too much 2nd hand smoke I think you'll be fine. Smoke and Run:ss

I consider my self very active (being that I'm going into my senior year as an NCAA gymnast) and I started smoking cigars last summer. I havn't noticed any deteriation in my performance but then again I only smoke maybe once a week in the summer and not at all during the winter (too damn cold). I think its better if you are active if you smoke because it will help reduce health risks in your lungs.:2

edit: I also smoke hookah tobacco from time to time and I know pleanty of college athletes that smoke cigarettes which is far worse then cigars.

We ahve a member of the forum who is a professional triathalete. He said that cigars have not affected him at all. Also know of two guys who regularly run marathons and have no issues.

i run about 20 miles a week, rep 275 for 10 deadlift, rep 225 for 10 bench, and rep 275 for 10 squat, im fine...

Great.. thanks for setting my mind at ease a bit..

I don't get an opportunity to smoke very often.. I'm currently working and living in NYC and I don't really have any place to go(stuck in corporate housing)..

Although tonight, I plan on stopping at JR's, which is on my walk home from the client and picking up something to enjoy on the rooftop deck of my building..

any suggestions? I'm a noob so I'd love to try out one of your favorites..

I don't know about you guys but I definately feel a difference. I play paintball competatively and even if it's just during practices I feel slower and sluggish, not to mention it's harder for me to want to get up and go jogging or do my own PT workouts because I'll get lazy and just want to smoke a cigar lol.

LOL I actually bat better if I've had a stogie earlier. I'm calmer and more relaxed at the plate.

I figure I inhale far more harmful fumes from cars while out running in a month than I do in an entire year of smoking cigars and pipes in a well-ventilated area. I do lay off anything with stimulants (cigars, coffee, etc.) for a few days if I'm planning a big run or hike since they tend to make me jittery.

I'm a really active person. Run 4miles every morning, ride my mt bike a lot, hiking, you get the idea. I'm almost a health freak which surprises people when I tell them I smoke. I've been smoking for a couple years, I don't have that smokers cough or anything like that, and feel no affects from smoking at all(I don't inhale).
What team did you play for?
