Cigars vs Cigarettes: new article

I want to argue that cigars are GOOD for me because they actually get me out of my office and outside for some "fresh air" :ss

I agree! There are many aspects of cigar smoking that can be pleasurable and may confer some benefits. But you have to match those with the aspects of smoking that may be unhealthy and may create a certain risk.

Just because a person exercises and eats well doesn't erase the fact that they can also do things that are unhealthy. That's why each person is different. We each have practices that alternately benefit our health or may detract from it. While smoking a cigar provides a time for relaxation, that still doesn't erase the fact that smoking delivers some unhealthy chemicals to the body.

I found it very interesting that the basic nature of cigars facilitates nicotine absorption through the mucosa while cigarrettes, being slightly acidic, deliver their nicotine punch through inhalaiton more effectively. Very interesting, indeed.

One thing I'm curious about. Did you run across any studies that dealt with decreases in stress and stress related ailments in relation to cigar smoking?

Not specifically with respect to cigar smoking, though there are plenty of studies that relate stress reduction to lower risk of several diseases. An excellent observation...

It is tempting to say that cigar smoking, since it represents a relaxing environment, could confer health benefits because of it. But, the literature is silent on that topic.

Again, I wanted to provide a balanced perspective and did not try to "spin" the literature in favor of cigar smoking.

Great read. I think I posted one of those vs. threads.

While they are somewhat opposed, I like to go for a nice long walk while smoking. I find the combination of being outside, getting the blood flowing, and relaxing mentally really helps me feel better at the end of a day. I've even noticed it helping in all around well-being as well. I only smoke 1/day, but not all the times. Sometimes 2/day on the weekend.

Well after a meeting of the minds with a couple of researcher friends of mine, I can say that none of us has read any specific study on whether offensive odors like the remnants of cigar smoke on clothes or furniture would have any negative health effects (which doesn't mean that none exist, only that we haven't seen any).

Here's our consensus though, for what it's worth:

Thanks for checking into that.

Also, holding up the lighter while toasting the foot must burn some calories?

Yes, yours was the thread I mentioned in my original post. I think I posted in your thread that I would be publishing the article soon and would create a thread.

Funny you mention that because I like to do the same thing. I have a beautiful small lake within walking distance from my house. It's a perfect distance to walk down and around the lake once or twice and then head home. The really funny thing is, I feel kind of self-conscious about putting on my walking shoes and shorts and smoking a cigar whilst all these people give me strange looks as they jog by... Ah well.... :ss
