CLIP vs PUNCH

Maturing Primate
Ok another useless poll for my own interest. Apart from a torpedo which obviously must be clipped, do you prefer a clip or a punch for your smoke...

Personally i prefer a punch, as i smoke larger ring smokes almost exlusivley, and Toro being my most enjoyed size. I like the way it draws the smoke to one channel and seems to concentrate the smoke into a more flavorful one...maybe it's just me.

also if your clipper is a bit dull or if the stogie has a wrapper issue a clip can do a little bit more damage as it is more of a violent cut, as oppossed to a punch which doesn't require a fast cut or a thrust, but can be achieved as a slow twist that even saves the cap and ensures even better construction durring burn...

Does anybody find that if you don't punch perfectly in the center that the burn is a little off? In other words, if the punch is closer to one edge, then the other edge burns a little slower and the cigar gets uneven. I've noticed this a couple times on cigars that have a history of burning perfectly.

As far as the poll, I favor a clip because of this perceived reason. I do plenty of punches though as my lighter has a punch and I forget my cutter at times.

i usually use my punch, sometimes on long cigars on a churchill or so, it can clog up a little which isint that great, so then i either punch again deeper or just use the cutter flat out

I'll be honest and say I have never punched. Can't explain why being I have had one for years but I always clip and ocassionally will V-cut.

I have used both, but have always been curious if there is a difference in flavor between the two. I'd like to take two of the same cigars and clip one and punch one, see if I can tell the difference.

My lighter has a punch, but to me it alwasy seems more of a pain, possibly due to the semi awkward angle it's at. I got some Xikar's and the clip is nice. I have yet to try my V cutter. I was in an 'emergency situatin" and used a golf tee and that worked well though.

For a while, I was simply using a 'nail' which worked fine for me. I did move up a grade to a 'punch' which I prefer for larger rg cigars (50+). I have no problems using a punch. You just need patients working it easy on your cigar. The smaller rg cigars get the clipper...:ss

Depending on the RG size that I'm smoking and the available tool. If I have my blazer with me I'll punch since it has a punch on the other end of it. Usually I do prefer to use the Xikar cutter since it's such a cool looking device.

The other week though the local B&M had one of those huge desktop V-cutters. I had to try it on the Tatauje...Kinda cool and the end looked like Pac-Man. :D

I clip the majority, but keep a punch on the key ring just in case. Every once in a while I'll punch one just for something different.

For the poll, I'm down for both I guess.

Definitely Clip with an Xikar or Palio , many cigars have been ruined by punching them , you have to squeeze on the cap to hard to make the punch go through and it can damage the whole cap and it will start to crack or unravel ..
If you have never used a good cutter you don't know what your missing !
You want lots of smoke , clip it , only so much can pass through a small little punched hole IMO :)

I have the same Xikar cutter that's in the picture below. I've tried a punch before but I didn't like it. I get a better draw and more smoke with a cutter.

I used to punch all the time, then I got my Palio. I have noticed the damaged end of the cap on occasion with the punch and since I got the Palio, I almost always use it.
