Cohibas- Real or Fake

Really hard to tell the difference. I had some known Cohiba fakes that I compared to known real Cohibas. Tough to tell. It wasn't until they were lit that you could taste which was which...

The pics look fine, but more importantly, how do they taste and where did you get them. Im not asking you to tell, but ask yourself where you got them and if it is a trustworthy source.

I got them from a friend that bought them in panama while going through the panama canal. He bought a box (which I have not seen) a couple of years ago. I don't know what he paid for them or where he actually bought them.

This question gets asked all the time.

Unfortunately, there's really only three ways to know for sure

1. Were they purchased at a La Casa Del Habanos? If not, there's reason to suspect their authenticity

2. Do their measurements match the specs for the particular vitola you have?

3. When smoked, do they 'taste' authentic?

You can forego #1 on the list some of the time, but #2 and #3 are necessary.

It's damn near impossible to tell from a few webshots whether they are authentic or not. There is nothing in the pictures that indicates, to me, that they are obviously fakes. That should not be construed as an endorsement of authenticity, however.

At this point, it's best to smoke em. Unless you are greeted with a strong Windex flavor, they should be good to smoke. Enjoy them, and be happy for the price you paid (since you said they were gifted!)

I don't fully agree with #2 either. ("the only thing constant about Cubans is their inconsistency" remember)
And since their measurements are given in millimeters, there is some deviation possible from the original indication on i.e. the Habanos website. (but often no more than 2mm)

Agreed.

I was thinking about differences greater than the stated 2mm. Sure, a 44 RG cigar may shrink to 43 or 42 over time, and a couple of milimeters in length is an acceptable deviation for a handmade product.

Thanks for pointing that out, though... I was speaking more towards the robusto that is +10mm off and has a 2004 LE band on it.

Also you can check the cap and cubans should have a Triple Cap(3 layers or rings), looking at your pic's i saw 2 but i could be wrong, cause the 3rd could be on the other side.....
And yes the sure way to know is to light it up! If you enjoy it then its a good one!

IM gathering from reading around that Cohibas are Cubans...I dont know what exactly that entales because I have seen Cohibas in my Local shoppe...I dont know if Cohiba is a brand and the ones that are being disscused here are the pre embargo version or whats going on. I get confused easily and this whole Cohiba thing is not helping. SO could one of you wisened FOG's help me out?

(PS sorry about jacking the thred...)

I read an article a while back that described the Panama Canal area as one of the worst areas for fakes. I believe they stated about 90% of the 'Cubans' in that area were fakes.

Not that yours are. If they smoke great, that's all that matters.

The real issue is who gifted them to you and where did they get them from.

It's only 2 cigars. I'd smoke em and thank the person who gifted them to you.

:tpd:
That's the best advice. Just don't include them in a pass, bomb, MAW, etc. If there is any question at all, just smoke 'em and enjoy 'em. Fake or not, it will only matter for a few minutes :)

There are three different brands that use the name Cohiba:

1) The original Cuban brand
2) A non-Cuban brand owned by General Cigar, which stole the name of the popular Cuban cigar and currently owns the Cohiba trademark in the US.
3) A brand of cigars sold (mostly) in the Dominican Republic, which look like fake Cuban Cohibas (although the bands indicate that they are from the DR, not Cuba). Ironically, General Cigar considers these DR Cohibas to be counterfeit Cohibas when they are sold in the United States, and GC aggressively protects the stolen Cohiba name.

There are no pre-embargo Cohibas. The Cohiba line was created in 1966 for VIPs and diplomatic gifts, and they weren't released commercially until about 1982.

There are a couple of different NC "Cohibas", one of which (no longer made) has a band that looks sorta like a CC band at first glance.
