Colibri Lighters WHY????

Is it just me or do most of the $100 lighters from this company seem to screw up at the worst possible time {which to me is any time I want to light up a cigar}. I've bought 5 or 6 of them and actually my oldest tri flame is the only I haven't had to send back. Anyone out there have a good suggestion to replace Colibri with another nice looking functioning lighter? Thanks to everyone for any imput on this matter. E...

Just type in lighters in the search block - and you will get enough reading to last you a few days. But yeah - you will find that Colibri rates somewhere near the bottom of the list -

I just don't get this lighter crap, i.e. why all the problems? Can't they have some quality control? My cheap-o Nibo works just fine and really doesn't look that cheap either.

For function, the Blazer/Prince PB207 is tops. It isn't the nicest looking lighter however (my wife says it looks like a crack pipe lighter) For form and, from what most say, function, the Dupont X-tend is about the most reliable around. It is good looking and It can be had for less than $100 if you look around. I also like my Lotus, but is isn't the most ergonomic that I have used. The slide ignition is sometimes a bit too smooth, so my thumb slips off when lighting. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your responses everyone on here seems to be very helpful, this is a nice change of pace from most chatrooms. E....

Eazye666,

I find that the more expensive the Colibri lighter the less reliable it is. I have had $20 and below Colibir lighters last a long time, and $90 lighters from Colibri break repeatedly.

The most durable lighter I have used over the years is the Prince/Blazer 207 PuffDaddy mentioned. It performs very well and can be had for under $30. It isn't the best looking lighter, and a lot of the super cheap gas station lighters mimicked its design - so it has little to no cool factor.

If you want a cool lighter that performs as well as the PB-207 and is reliable as well, the St. Dupont XTend lighter is the one to buy, but you can have 3 PB-207s for the price of one XTend.

Cheaper lighters than $30, Nibo is the brand to look at, they make some nice $10 range lighters.

I picked up one of the Ronson JetLites mentioned in the Reviews - Cigar Products thread from WalMart this afternoon, actually I picked up two. Decent enough adjustment on the flame, lights very easily and hasn't failed to light once yet. The price is certainly right at $2.94 + tax. It'll light its first cigar tonight after dinner.

I have over 6 expensive Colibri lighters, and have had them for 12-18 months, and they all still work great, so I guess I got lucky.

I also have a few $20+ Nibos and they work great as well.

I would also recommend that you look into Lotus lighters, they are beautys and have never disappointed me.

Try one out at a B&M and if you like it buy it. Lighters are like cars. A good cheap one will get you where you are going. If you like flash, you need to find one you really like or you wasted a lot of good cigar money.

I have a $40.00 Colibri, It's been about 3 years, the only time I had a problem was when I put that ronson crap in it. It works good now.

The Solo lighters work great and can't be beat for the price and performance for around $24. I've had mine for over 2 years without any problems.

Go with either a Dupont Xtend or a Porsche Design or a Blazer. The Xtend usually run around $120-$200 depending on which one and where you buy them. I for one saw a fellow employee run over one with his car... get out pick it up and light it on the first click. The good thing about the Xtend is that it eliminates many of the unneccesary parts found in Colibri's and the parts that it does have are made either of metal or ceramic as opposed to Colibri which uses a lot of plastic. Porsche design lighters are around $160 as well and yes... they are REALLY designed by Porsche... the car people. I believe that they are actually manufactured by Dupont though... which means quality. Blazer is a cheaper option but they are probably the cheapest well made lighter worth buying. Most can be had for around $50.

I know what you mean. I've concluded that the jet-flame lighters are problematical and are affected by external factors as well as design. It still is my opinion that Colibri has moredefects than most and are less reliable.

I have one and it works "OK" but when it goes I'll never buy another one.

The guys at my B&M will flat out tell you that Colibri is "overpriced junk". They've told me that you pay $80.00 for one and they have lighters that are 1/3 of that price and 3x more reliable.

I second this!

Not only do they work well but they have a LIFETIME warranty - even 50% against theft or loss! :u
