Correct me if I'm wrong...

Rock a mullet like a STAR
So I just had a CAO Gold 5-Karats with lunch...Mini cigars..:ss

Help me out with what I'm suppose to observe and learn here:

I tried toasting the foot and semi-unsuccessful with match sticks outdoors..but regardless of the fact.

I was reading the inside tin and was suppose to taste Vanilla, nutmeg, and a hint of spice. Uhm...first few takes it was spicy! No hint of vanilla or nutmeg at all..then half way into the mini I started holding onto the take a bit longer and man was it smoooooth:dr Got the vanilla hint or maybe nutmeg but overall it was spicy. The guy at the shop said it was as a mild cigar but felt comparable to my cohiba pequenos (which is stronger correct?)

I guess I'm just wondering how close am I to tasting and observation?
teach this young gorilla please...

How fast were you smoking and how much was the wind a factor?

From the brief description, it sounds like those two factors may have affected the smoke :2

Well I had 30 min to smoke that little cigar and I took up 20 of it. I did notice it was windy at times but would that effect the taste?

really? hmm..I usually smoke outside any how...so you telling me unless there is no wind that day I'll always get different tastes?

Not necessarily, I was just trying to give one reason it might have been effected. There could be a number of reasons, temperature, humidity, speed, what you were drinking, for the flavor difference. Personally, I don't know much about what flavors I am tasting/looking for, I just know if I like it or not. Everyone's palate is different, the same cigar may taste totally different to two different people. If you like it, smoke it. If not, pitch it. :ss:2

HAHA thanks...I just had this presumption that to really enjoy a cigar you had to be able to distinguish the flavor and such...like wine drinks...

Wasn't drinking anything at all...just sitting outside work smoking.. thanks for the responses though..

Forget about what you are "supposed" to taste, especially if it is a description written by someone who wants you to buy their stuff.

If I believed every description then every cigar I have ever had would be "ultra creamy, swathing the palate with hints of spice, wood, leather, and earth." They would all "burn cool and steady." And the person selling it to me would have me believe that they are LOSING money on the deal!

I made the mistake of buying boxes based on these descriptions when I was a newbie. Now I know better! :tu
Naaaa, read top25 cigar and club stogie and trust your own taste buds.

sounds like a plan...I just need to let the funds come back a bit before I do more damage... :D

I have smoked several hundred cigars this year and have never tasted leather, dirt, coffee, chocolate, etc. But I can tell if its smooth & creamy, peppery, or harsh & bitter. I also know if I like it or not, so that's all I expect from my taste buds. BTW, I ALWAYS drink something while smoking, usually ice tea. :2

Well said :tpd:. Also, go to a good B&M and chat with those guys, (2 guys on rte 28 in Salem, NH is near you and is a good one.

They actually just opened up shop on RTE 3 Nashua which is even closer to me...too bad they had to take over the Hooters place to do it.

Don't forget--if you like it buy more!

oldforge....is that a Chau Chau...

I would buy more of the ones I like if I could remember what I like versus what was just OK..

I agree with pretty much everything mentioned above. What is good to me, may be a dog rocket to you. Everyone has their own preferences and may taste something slightly different than you. I tell people all the time that I taste chocolate when I smoke Pepin Black torps and usually people look at me funny when I tell them that is what I get from them. Part of the fun of this hobby is trying new things and trying to find what you like and dislike. Like others have mentioned don't take the word of the manufacturer of what it is you are supposed to taste. In the end they are in the business of selling cigars so they must make theirs more appealing than the 14 other boxes sitting beside theirs.
Don't stress yourself trying to pick out the different nuances in the smoke and just sit back and enjoy it. Picking out hints of this or that will come with time. In the meantime kick your feet up and enjoy the experience.

I look up what others have tasted and what the descriptions mention. I use these as hints for what to look for, but if I can't taste it, I can't taste it. I do the same thing for wine and beer.

I bought a tin of the Gold Karats and experienced exactly the same. I expected smooth and creamy and had spicy instead. One thing I have found with the small cigars is that you have to baby them. You can't jump all over them like you can a torpedo or the like. They also seem to taste closer to the description if I take them out of the tins and leave them in the humidor for a couple of weeks after I get them.

I think I'll try that as soon as I'm comfortable with the setting on my Humi..

I have yet to taste all the hints of this or hints of that. Or tones of this or that. I just try to keep it simple. You know,,, "man that was good" or "Yak I'll not smoke another one of them." Just like what Charley, the owner of my favorite B&M, say's when someone ask for a recommendation. Don't matter what I like, What do you like ?.. I get a kick out of that everytime I here him say that.. What Im ramblin on about is you just have to try it yourself to see what Hint of this or tone of that is in their.. I'll shutup now.. Good luck ...
