who the heck are these people? bidding . Numerous times I bid on 5 packs of sticks I want to try only to find out the winning bid is like 20%-30% higher than msrp.Where are these people coming from..............I know this is old news just needed to vent................

Research the cigars you want, place your bid low and set your max bid at or under msrp. Then sit back and hope for the best. I usually bid on the quickies . I have had the best luck on Sundays for some reason.

Who are those people that put a starting bid 3-4 steps above the base bid on 150-300 lot auctions?

The stuff i bid on hardly ever goes above CI price but I've been known to take it just above the CI price because I was trying to stack for weekly shipping. Typically I know my price and let stuff go p easy.

Nope, quickies are worse.
Generally the items I want to bid on, if they come up on quikies, are about 5 to 10% above the normal bid prices. And since the normal bid prices are often at or above retail, it gets pretty idiotic at times.

Which is why lately I've been heading over to Famous Smoke's auction site instead. At least over there, the items are still under the prices I can get directly from Famous.

What really makes it a head scratcher is when I see a $32 bid on an item that costs $25 at CI. Even if you account for the shipping costs, it would be cheaper to buy it from CI.

I'm hoping this situation improved over the Winter months, because it's getting kind of silly.

You can find great deals you just have to be patient. Let those people pay more than MSRP because that allows the rest of us to get good deals. CI would close the site tomorrow if those people went away and only the bargain hunters chose to bid.

I acquired a box of Tobacos Baez last week for $103. That's $30 less than anywhere else. A day or two later a five pack went for slightly more than MSRP.

I've also been able to score boxes of La Flor Dominican Cabinet Oscuros for 30% under MSRP and see the same box go for more a week later.

You can almost always find deals on 5 Vegas Miamis, any RP product, etc. Sure if you want the high demand stuff you have to play your cards right but it can happen.

I've been bidding since the site opened and it's no better or worse now than it ever has been. One day you get a deal, the next day there are no deals. Do some homework, stick to your price, and have some patience. :2

if i find some gurkhas that i like i might bid on a 5 pack or two since they are usually at a reasonable price. i even get lucky one some montecristos. but i wont even try to bid on some fuentes. dumb people like to bid $50 or $60 right away on a four day auction and i've noticed people bidding against their own price just to make the price higher (no one would be bidding on that item) and in the end they are buying something $40 or more dollars over what you could've paid at CI or famous.

Last quickie I won were R.P vintage seconds Toro's (15 cigars) for $20.00. I believe that was a good deal. It was on a Sunday.

Same as Ebbay... Gotta know your product and to keep the emotions out of it.

I check the site frequently for about 15 different brands/cigars that I like or am interested in, but I have yet to find a deal on any of them. Not a single one. They ALWAYS go for more than I can find them for on other sites.

I know quite a bit about auction theory (my doctoral dissertation used auction theory heavily), and can partially explain the 'irrational exuberance' that comes with over-bidding.

First, there is a utility (i.e. pleasure) in winning. Even if there is a cost of winning, there is a joy to it. One only need to travel to Las Vegas for a few hours to see this in action.

Second, the assumption is that bidders in a competitive marketplace are fully informed when placing bids. Obviously, this is not the case if people are bidding one penny over what they could normally buy the product for in a posted offer setting.

And finally, there is disutility (i.e. pain) in losing. Even if the closing bid is greater than the posted offer, there is psycological discomfort in not winning the auction.

This stuff happens on ebay all the time. Even though the ebay instructions are clear, people end up not bidding the maximum amount they are willing to pay for an item.

If I'm willing to pay $10,000 for a Ferrari, I shouldn't be upset in any way if the auction closes with a final bid of $10,100.

Same thing with Cbid. Put the maximum amount you're willing to pay for an item (using auto-bidder), and if you win, celebrate. If you lose, no big deal and you should just wait for the next lot.

-MG-'s chimp program will only help jungle dwellers enter into an auction with more knowledge... Knowledge is power, or so 'they' say....

Everything I have my eyes on is a good deal :) I love c bid, but it could easily get me in trouble.

Thanks for the link to C-H-I-M-P! It's fantastically useful.

That is a good deal.
In fact, it's lower than the minimum recorded for all RP Vintage seconds in Toro sizes according to CHIMP database so you made out like a bandit.

However, based on the cigars I've been monitoring, quickies almost always seem to go for just a bit more than the normal auctions.

The prices for the really common CI exclusives seem to be not as bad: 5 Vegas, certain RP and Gurkha blends, etc... But things like Padron, forget it.

Anyways, I'll still use CBid for things like RP X-Outs since they seem to be exclusive to CI/CBid and are still somewhat reasonable. But for all others, I'll either head to Taboo (Padrons/Olivas) or Famous' auction site (for just about everything else that I still smoke).

It has gotten to the point that I don't bid on anything unless they have a large number of bundles and the price is substantially below retail. This means that maybe I will have to pay $2-3 above the minimum bid price to win. I just got a bundle of 12 Fonseca Habana Seleccions for about $2 each, which is a good price. It was from a lot of 150 bundles. The lots of 1-3 bundles are normally bid beyond reason, and for those things I had just as soon buy those sticks from a retailer with a fixed price and not go through the hassle of bidding and being outbid by those willing to pay full retail. I don't know why those people don't just go to CI and buy them, unless they like the thrill of "winning".

I hear ya on that and it seems in the heat of the auction people don't want to lose, guess it's a competitive thing. I see alot of people just have their auto bid so even if you do put in a couple of bids you will eventually lose anyway unless you get to the magic MSRP number but then you are still looking at S/H costs. I won a Rocky Patel Sun Grown 100 count humidor this last week that retails for $140 and picked it up for $36. Guess it's all in about being in the right time at the right place.

I use Cbid a lot. I just try to get in early and set my autobid to the max I'm willing to pay. I set it and forget it. If I win great if I don't it'll be up for bid again. I also have tried to pad an order to cut shipping costs but I won't overbid or pay retail for a lot.
