Don Pepin Series JJ Maduro

Oreo Cookie Blues
As some people know, my birthday was on Monday (the 9th, share it with Malik23!), so I decided to have a nice pre-brithday mini-herf with a friend. I plucked this dark robusto out of my newly-gifted travel humi.

I cut it with my cheap-o guillotine (couldn't find the scissors, turns out they were in my coat pocket in the car, but that's a whole 'nother story), and the pre-light draw was nothing but raisin. I could tell it was gonna be a spicy stick, but I was aware of that fact simply because it was a Pepin factory product. I lit it up with a nice tri-flame torch, and puffed away (aided by a glass of red)!

Initial Reaction: This stogie started off with nothing but power. The wrapper left a peppery taste on my lips, but it slowly wore off, and it became a cedar explosion.

Construction: Nothing short of perfection, the wrapper was oily and smooth, while the burn was razor sharp. Never had to relight, and touch-ups were minimal.

Overall: This is one of the more balanced cigars I've ever had. It was not too strong, but would bring a typical non-smoker to their knees. The flavor, for some reason, was very difficult to discern. I could taste the raisin and cedar, but couldn't pick out the subtle hints... turned out to be hickory! Don't know how, but that stick tasted like hickory-smoked bacon!

I'd recommend picking up any of these in stock, they're smoking great, and with some time, could end up being a great stick!

Rating: 9/10

Hickory smoked bacon? awesome, i need to get some of these, cook some eggs and i am set! lol

In all seriousness though, i have tried the JJ nats and thought they were a good smoke, i guess i will need to keep an eye out too for the maddies.

Thanks for sharing :tu

they remind me of toasted marshmallows over a campfire.............seriously.

Ya know I first read the marshmallow taste reference in an old issue of smoke magazine about 4yrs ago. At 1st I thought the reviewers were freaking nuts...But I swear I've tasted marshmallows in smokes on a number of occasions.

Maybe it's my subconscious, maybe its not, but damn...I love this hobby!

I think I find the toasted marshmallow description more appealing than smoked bacon - although it's certainly intriguing. The only RP Edge maduro I smoked tasted like smoked beef jerky, so I can understand the flavor range.

Anyway, I'm dying to try a JJ maduro - thanks for the great review.

I guess I meant it was more of the hickory, and less of the bacon (just a reference), but I really do love bacon, so it's not too gross for me! I can understand the marshmallow flavor you guys are getting, but it was rather muted in my stogie. I would like to see how this thing ages in some cedar wrapping, or perhaps even a tubo in the future (don't see it happening, though).
