I went out to the New Havana web site last week to look up the name of a Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ that I had received from someone in the monthly lottery. When I got there, I saw they had something new, an El Triunfador Lanceros. I hadn't heard of this, so I did a search and couldn't find much about it, except that it came from Tatuaje's Pete Johnson.
I figured if Pete Johnson made it and New Havana sold it, it was worth a try, so I ordered a 5 pack (plus a couple of Pinar del Rio samplers). I smoked my first El Triunfador tonight.
It had a nice looking dark brown wrapper. The band had a dark brown background that perfectly matched the wrapper with white lettering and line work. It was a very attractive package.
I clipped the cap and found the pre-light draw was quite tight. This was surprizing, since it felt a bit soft. I hesitate to use a poker on a cigar this slim, since it often splits the wrapper, but I did it anyway. It helped a bit, and I managed to not hurt the wrapper, so that was good.
I toasted and lit the smoke, and found the draw tightened back up pretty quickly. The burn was great and the taste was OK, but it was tighter than I like.
The cigar started out milder than I expected. I don't know if Don Pepin Garcia had a hand in the blending, but it did taste Pepinesque, just on the mild side.
Fortunately, the draw improved as time went on, and the flavor picked up. The middle third was pretty good, and the last third great, to my taste.
I look forward to trying another one. If the draw would start out better, I would enjoy this a lot, I think.
