El Triunfador Lanceros

I went out to the New Havana web site last week to look up the name of a Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ that I had received from someone in the monthly lottery. When I got there, I saw they had something new, an El Triunfador Lanceros. I hadn't heard of this, so I did a search and couldn't find much about it, except that it came from Tatuaje's Pete Johnson.

I figured if Pete Johnson made it and New Havana sold it, it was worth a try, so I ordered a 5 pack (plus a couple of Pinar del Rio samplers). I smoked my first El Triunfador tonight.

It had a nice looking dark brown wrapper. The band had a dark brown background that perfectly matched the wrapper with white lettering and line work. It was a very attractive package.

I clipped the cap and found the pre-light draw was quite tight. This was surprizing, since it felt a bit soft. I hesitate to use a poker on a cigar this slim, since it often splits the wrapper, but I did it anyway. It helped a bit, and I managed to not hurt the wrapper, so that was good.

I toasted and lit the smoke, and found the draw tightened back up pretty quickly. The burn was great and the taste was OK, but it was tighter than I like.

The cigar started out milder than I expected. I don't know if Don Pepin Garcia had a hand in the blending, but it did taste Pepinesque, just on the mild side.

Fortunately, the draw improved as time went on, and the flavor picked up. The middle third was pretty good, and the last third great, to my taste.

I look forward to trying another one. If the draw would start out better, I would enjoy this a lot, I think.

Nice review! I waited a tad too late on getting my hands on these. I was going to order a 5'er today, but they are all gone!

Thanks for the review Mike. I'm really excited to smoke some of these. Too bad your first sample had a tight draw, and hopefully the next ones will smoke a little bit better for you. Did you dry box this cigar or smoke it straight from your humidor?

No, I didn't dry box it. It had been in my 65% cooler for a couple of days since coming in from New Havana.

Smoking this cigar right now. Perfect burn, perfect draw great flavor. I will be smoking alot more of these.

:tpd: Smokin it straight from the FedEx truck, and it's great. I normally wait a day or so but New Havana packs cigars really well. The best part about this smoke is that I've got 9 more in the cooler haha.

i'll post a review with pics tomorrow. my fiver came in monday and my box is on order from NHC. once i heard this was the cabaiguan maduro's in a lancero form i just had to grab a box.

thanks for the review. how do these compare to the tat brown label especiales, if you have the experience?

cheers!

it's been a while since i've had an especiales, but from memory i'd say this lancero is not quite as complex as the tatuaje. it was more influenced to the maduro side, maybe SLIGHTLY sweet by comparison. really apples and oranges. but both very good cigars.

The El Triunfador wasn't quite as complex as the Especiales, although the El Tri did have quite a bit of spice for the first inch or two.

Right now, I still prefer the Especiales, but the El Tri seems to have great potential in my book.
