Emergency Storage?

Alright, due to some amazingly favorable events taking place, I feel that within the next week or so I'll have more cigars than will fit in my humidor. I don't really want to get a coolerdor as I'm sure I'll be spreading the luck around and sharing with friends and what not, and I don't intend on having near this many again... so my question is, how would you store them temporarily?

I was thinking (a lot of them are coming loose) I could get empty boxes from a local store, fill em up, throw in a disposable humidification device, put the box in a ziplock bag, and then just leave it alone till I have room to move the smokes into my humidor.

I live in Pasadena, so the ambient RH is like 60%+ or something stupid, so It's probably not a problem, but all the same, I wanted to ask

That would be the best idea. This might be too much money but they have bags called "the humidor bag" that are like ultra heavy duty leak proof that will hold humidity for 6 months. You can always use the bags again and take up less space than a box but either one is good. If u cant get the boxed some tupperwear with ceder sheets in it would work too

Smaller than a cooler is snap-lock plastic food storage containers. Air tight seals, come in many sizes, readily available at grocery stores.

These lock and lock containers work great.
I'm surprised they are not mentioned more often here in the jungle.

Maybe because most just give in and get a cooler or two.:hn After their first three humidors get full a hell of a lot faster than they ever imagined. :D

Fair enough... I think there's a WalMart somewhere around here, they have big ones for pennies right? I figure if I'm going to get a cooler, I'm going to get a large one. No sense in getting a small one if I'm only going to be upgrading again later right? :/

My only real reason not to is that... ugh, it's nearly as humid down as most people seem to keep their stuff anyway, but I suppose I'm thinking about moving back to Northern California, where I'll actually need something, right? Now is probably as good a time as any.

If I get the cooper, I'll probably just use it for boxes (since they are already cedar and I can skip covering the inside) and use my little cabinet humi for tins, small boxes, bundles, and singles.

I must ask though, why coolers rather than any other given container? I mean... realistically, it's all the same right? It's not like the cooler is going to keep it nice and cold like it would ice... I've always wondered this, never bothered asking though.

And if I do the cooler, the general consensus is that beads are find, no need for any kind of active system right? After all, I'm not going to be going in there very often.

I prefer 48qt coolers.
They stack nicely in the closet and I kinda use em like file cabinets,
putting catagories of cigars with their mates.
(not putting all my eggs in one basket.)

Not all your eggs in one basket indeed... I woke up the other day to find my 100 count chest at 85%, letting it air out a bit and closing it resulted in a burst Nub - nicely enough, the exact cigar I wanted to smoke when I opened it and found it in ruin.

I still don't get the cooler thing. I'd much rather have a nice looking piece of furniture. I get that it is cheap but humidors themselves don't cost that much. I guess if you must have thousands of sticks on hand it makes sense. My max inventory is about 250 and I have a total capacity between the 2 humidors of 425. Because I have much more capacity than I need I never have to panic over purchasing. People that tell you that you must keep them full are just looking for an excuse to buy more. The only reason it matters is that amount of air that is exchanged when it is opened. So it takes a few minutes longer to recover... cigars aren't that fragile.

Coolers though are great for box storage as opposed to desktops where you have to remove all the cigars from their packaging. I do agree however on the point a humi doesn't have to be full to maintain rh (but don't tell my wife that ;) )

My 70 quarts were less than $30, and have seen on sale for less than $25, so, yes, very cheap storage!!! 70 qts are about as big as I want to handle, and still small enough to be easily storable in a closet.

My only real reason not to is that... ugh, it's nearly as humid down as most people seem to keep their stuff anyway, but I suppose I'm thinking about moving back to Northern California, where I'll actually need something, right? Now is probably as good a time as any.

Good coolers hold humidity fairly constant, but if you are in a humid climate, you probably need lower humidity beads a-plenty! Yours would be more for removing humidity than retaining it. Luckily, most long-term storage recommendations for aging are for slightly lower humidity, so 60% beads would work even in northern Cali.

If I get the cooper, I'll probably just use it for boxes (since they are already cedar and I can skip covering the inside) and use my little cabinet humi for tins, small boxes, bundles, and singles.

That's what I do. And finding boxes to put extra singles in is fairly easy!

While coolers cannot "cool" without the aid of ice or other "outside forces", they are well insulated, and do tend to limit temperature swings when left closed, and especially when left in cool, dark places like deep closets! So, cigars will go thru smaller temperature variations.

And if I do the cooler, the general consensus is that beads are find, no need for any kind of active system right? After all, I'm not going to be going in there very often.

You might find the need for something extra if you move to a lower humidity area. After all, beads can only release humidity to increase the rh if they have humidity stored. I'm kinda like you are now. In central Bama, Rh is only lower inside because of A/C. Otherwise, I would probably spend much time drying out my beads. As it is, I usually have a couple of pounds of 65% in each cooler, and will put two, sometimes three small water pillows in the coolers if the humidity seems to be low. It usually takes the water pillows 6 months to dry out!

An addes benefit to keeping the cigars inside of boxes inside of the coolers (besides the cedar benefit) is that this is a double protection that keeps the humudity bounce away from most of the cigars everytime you do open the cooler(s). It also would tend to limit the range of any outbreak of beetles to single boxes (hopefully!) BUT, you do want to make a habit of ocassionally opening all the boxes and fondleing all the cigars. Helps in the happiness factor, great sinus check-up material (makes sure the smell sense still works!), and gives you a chance to check for beetles and mold. It is also a good way to find a jewel or two you may have "put back" and forgotten about!

Good luck on the slope. I'm at three coolers, and half a dozen humis!

I agree with both of you, haha. I have a 20 count box, a 100 count chest, and an Anithime or whatever cabinet. 20 count for damaged sticks - for when I won't mind a stick potentially exploding. A 100 count to hold 1-2 of everything I have so there's always something I want on hand, and then the cabinet for everything else.

Unfortunately the cabinet has been dry as shit recently, and the chest was sitting at 85% one morning with a couple exploded cigars, so... life is stressful. I'm watching a movie and every 10 minutes the add water alarm in my hydra goes off... ugh!
