Fake Cohibas

There are a number of posts about fake Cohibas and people being ripped off. Some anger is displayed at the fact that a counterfeit cigar is bing sold, which I agree is a misrepresentation of the truth. The is fact violating a copy righted product is not despicable. However, remember that Cuba stole these labels (maybe with the exception of Cohiba) from the people that made them. While this does not make it right, I tend to go easy on the poor Mexicans trying to make a buck.

It is a tough living to peddle cigars on the beach in 90 degree heat. You have to live by the motto "buyer beware". I can give you millions of examples of products that sell for way more then they are worth to me. A painting may be valued a six or seven figures but it won't be hanging on a wall in my house. Same goes for a watch, if you can spend 60K and it makes you happy, fine. My $30 Timex keeps great time.

Anyway, last time we were in Mexico I was smoking a Siglo IV on the beach purchased from a nearby Habanos S. A. shop. Great smoke by the way! A cigar vendor came by and asked me what I was smoking. I told him. He asked if I would like to try some Cohiba knockoffs. I had seen him sell a couple of his five pack plastic covered boxes for about $60 each. Told him I was not interested. He told me he would sell me a fiver of Cohiba robustos for $20 and a drink. I figured what the hell, for $4 a cigar they were worth a try.

Anyway they were worth the $20. Good construction, nice draw, smooth creamy medium flavor.

So the moral of the story is, buy stuff that is worth the money to you and you will never get ripped off.

But he called them "knockoffs", so he wasn't really trying to rip you off.

Selling fakes that are purported to be the real thing...different story altogether. :2

I don't disagree. Just don't think selling fake Cohibas on the beach is one of the worst crimes imaginable.

I dont think anyone said that selling fakes was one of the worst crimes imaginable. But nonetheless, it is really akin to stealing -- to try and con people out of their hard-earned $$.
Not to mention - who knows what they put in those cigars?

From what i've read about fakes - sometimes "unsavoury ingredients" are used in the making of them. I don't know how true this is - but personally, i don't think i'd smoke one even if it was given to me for free

Atleast he was honest with you though - so you wern't being lied to

Things are real or they are not.

When they are not they pollute an environment. The same beach.. different smoker.. might end up in a pass here or elsewhere that creates anger based upon ignorance or intent.

Same guy on a beach selling "custom rolls" is different than things that "appear" and are purported to be a real brand.

Personally, death to counterfeiters.

I'm going to go out on a limb here because I'm not a lawyer, but I do believe counterfeiting is illegal. Whether it's counterfeit money, counterfeit watches or handbags or counterfeit cigars if the intent is to defraud the public into buying something that is not the real product then it is wrong.

I'm not talking about products that are labeled as "counterfeit" up front but about those where the seller is trying to convince the buyer that it is the real thing.

That is against the law and we shouldn't break the law. But hey! This is a forum filled with people who boast of buying and smoking cigars in the U.S. that are illegal.
