Favorites, habits, ruts and circumstances.

Cigar smoking like anything in our lives can become "part of the tapestry". Meaning we smoke as part of our "other activities" without sometimes stepping back to examine the conscious or unconscious actions we take in cigar choices.

I remember having "favorites" that I pretty much smoked all the time. Man I loved my Gurkha regent toros. Such a well made even burning cigar. Punch Rare corojo Pitas? Nummy lil suckers which were perfect for an hour drive. Today is different than a few years ago. Have a few more cigars to choose from and thought it might be interesting to get other folks read on "why this cigar"?

Lunchtime is my most frequent smoking event. Pretty much have a cigar every day on the way to and from. Choice of cigar is strongly influenced by how far lunch is on a given day. Party Shorts, Boli PC's, PLPC's etc on short run days. Going further .. RA or Party 898's maybe a robusto or CG. Long lunch missions = churchills or maybe even a cigar for each direction. Sometimes who is going also has an impact. Sam or I usually grab 2 so if he provided sumtin good the day before might dig into something more special than the usuals or visa versa. And usually once a week on New Hire to lunch day its a triple choice. :D When I go alone for lunch typically will grab a cigar from my singles / gifted cigars as it's the time I think about these cigars to smoke. It helps break up the feeling of loneliness from lunching alone cuz I think nice things about the person I go the cigars from.

Usually once or twice a week I'll stay late and have a cigar in the office. Typically this is a cigar I'm going to type some words on here. Which cigar? More often than not it's influenced by something someone else has posted. A review, a question etc. Sometimes it's a new cigar/first time smoke that just came to mind. Occasionally "the day" may have influenced and dictated pulling a "special".

Evenings I usually don't smoke unless I'm going over to my bud's house for a lil TV in the smoke room. Usually try and bring a cigar for us to smoke that is outside of his "rut like habits" Could be old or unique or just off the beaten path. As Bill Murray said in Groundhog day.. anything different is good. Well at least once in case it sucks I guess.

Weekends are cool as there is time to smoke. Winter less so than summer. Winter it's usually a trip to the office or at Sams once for a game etc with the typical choices previously mentioned. Sometimes it's spur of the moment so it's just whatever happens to be in the Hali. This can lead to some interesting "out of cycle" cigar particularly if it follows a herf and I've left poo in the Halli. Trips to and from the Shack in the winter provide solitude for smoking stuff typically from the singles but sometimes a "treat or 2". Nothing like an hour drive with 70's and 80's rock and a fine cigar. Summer time is different in that lots of outside activities home and at the shack that I can smoke during. Tend to choose cigars that you might consider "boring" just smoking it at one time. As a compliment to doing a chore or the like you don't notice the flavor monotony as much and I think it's a great time to enjoy these flavorful but unchanging smokes. It's where I might sneak some NC's like Anejos etc into the rotation along with real fresh cigars or cigars I might categorize as good "puff puff" ones.

Herfs are cool. It is where you have the opportunity to share your best with others and smoke a few to boot. I tend to smoke much better cigars at herfs than on a normal daily basis. I assume others do the same but to each his own. It's almost as much fun "finding stuff" to pack as it is smoking at the herf. Every herf pack for me is like Christmas.. cool I forgot I had this. As I get older this might be a daily revelation.

Anyway, sorry for the rant I was just curious about what others did and ended up writing a book instead of asking the question.

I have 'way less experience than you Klugs (tip of the hat), but I agree it seems there are a range of factors that dictate choice - personal mood, time, occasion and that ephemeral thing called taste. Often, I go to the humi fully expecting to grab a Fuente and end up with a Padron or Torano - just to name a few brands. Maybe I'm in the mood for a robusto and end up with a toro or Churchill. I do find that the type of wrapper I choose is usually fairly consistent. If I want cameroon, I'll have cameroon - what may change is the label or vitola.

Interesting topic and I look forward to reading other responses.

Being a guy who is always banging his head because there is just 'too much to do', I don't often enough stop and smell the tobacco. Unless I am meeting up with someone, where I purposefully choose larger or higher quality cigars, I lately have been thinking of what is small and tasty. After several tight draw Hoyo du Marie's, Punch Margs or Boli Demi Tasse, I get a strong jones going for heavy body, lots of flavor and volumes of smoke.

I don't often have a cigar at lunch but have been thinking of occasionally burning one. I actually planned a cigar for lunch today but it's raining and my motivation waned. One thing I do enjoy is a smoke in the evening on the deck when it's still light enough to read a book. I haven't written any reviews lately and I'm sure I would if I can get back to the evening relaxation time.

I typically bring four cigars to work.Usually a couple "du Prince", a PC of the NC kind to have with my coffee in the am and one out of the ordinary cigar to smoke if I get a chance.
Today it's a custom rolled torpedo I got from a friend.I think I will fire this thing up.
I cant say I've had too many ruts :)

Sun - Wed - One cigar in the evening, usually a robusto or larger/longer.

Thur - Friday - Straight to the B&M after work for usually a PC or perhaps a corona/ coronas grande to start followed by dinner usually out. After dinner usually an Upmann #2 or the like (Torp/Beli).

Sat - Lately I have been smoking DCs, Salomones and Gran Coronas in the mid afternoon. Later after dinner it's anybodys guess what size.

I deviate from this routine from time to time but I'm at the lounge in the B&M alot...ALOT!
:ss

my choices are pretty simple...

Time-if I have a lot I smoke a big cigar, if I have a little I smoke a small one.

Mood-if I want strong I go Maduro, if not I go with conn. or something of the like.

Occasion-if it's not a special occasion I usually grab something under $6, if it's a special occasion maybe an Opus, Padron anny, Davidoff, or Edicion de Silvio.
If I'm doing yard work or tailgating, usually something under $3

When these three factors are taken in to account, VIOLA I have my cigar.

You're a good writer Da Klugs and reading your post was quite nice. IT painted a picture of your life, I felt your appreciation for someone who sent you a smoke, and getting our buddy out of a rut smoke. Quite nice indeed.

It's really nice living in teh country and having a porch with a view. Banana grove, pineapple patch, avocado tree fruiting now, palms, papayas et all. The United Nations of trees and plants in one glance.
I sit on the porch quite often but am rarely able to see what is in front of me. Most of the times the mind takes over and I am thinking, planning, wondering, or just out there in the great yonder.
However, sometimes a good cigar snaps me out of my unconscious thinking and makes me go "that was nice" and I see everything around again looking so beautiful.
Makes me thankful for life, this aged leaf.
