Finally bought an wine cooler! (show & tell + questions)

Ah that's odd. I use distilled water with the beads and it works perfectly.

@vstromark - I'm really hoping I can make it to the next one.

Not odd at all, in that case you would be using distilled water with beads, not plain distilled water like I mentioned. :)

If I use poly with distilled water (ie 50/50), it seems to work fine, except for my odd humidity readings lately.
 
now make sure you plug the little drain hole in the back by the fan.

I would advise against doing this. I did the same thing base on someone's recommendation. I ended up wetting/ruining several cigars this way. The drain hole is there for a reason.

Put enough beads in there if you are worried about humidity. I had 2 lbs of 60% in mine spread around the cooler. Never had a problem with humidity swings.

With the drain hole open, there's no way that it would keep proper humidity, especially for those of us living in drier climates. Best case would be that RH would rise to proper levels but your beads would get leeched of water very quickly by the outside environment.

You're also not supposed to keep any cigars on the bottom of the cooler. If anything, I'd just put some beads down there to absorb any condensation.

This brings up a couple of things. One, to maximize space, I am going to move to using only a bottom shelf eventually, and put beads under the bottom shelf (maybe some up top as well). If you do this, I don't see plugging the drain hole to be a problem.

However, I don't have the drain hole plugged, and it hold humidity fine so long as the outside (read, inside the room) temp isn't too high. When the thermoelectric has to kick on, it does drain some humidity. Other than that, it doesn't seem to lose humidity too badly at all with the hole open. Maybe due to humid air being less dense (if I remember correctly).
 
Hope I don't get shown the "search" button with this question. I looked at a dual temp zone cooler last nite but the upper zone would only go to 54 degrees or so... Its an 18 bottle Haier afficiando @ target. Anybody got the scoop on this model?

In regards to smell: I rubbed mine down physically with baking soda and let it sit over night a little wet to absorb smell with the door closed. I may have also wiped down with rubbing alcohol prior to the baking soda rub..

Then I let it sit open for a day or two to let the plastic smell ventilate and air-out.

I think after that I put some empty cedar boxes/trays with the hopes that the plastic would absorb the cedar smell.. which it does eventually.

I took my time in doing all this (about a week) just because one fellow gorilla (Jason Love III) had his smokes ruined from the plastic smell and basically had to ditch em' all a few years back.

Let me know if any other questions.. my has been running solid for 2+ years and I doubt that I can ever get the smell of cedar/cigars out of the plastic, ever!
 
FYI follow MocoBird's tutorial of installing a PC fan... otherwise the humidity between the top and bottom can be drastic (about 10% difference in mine if I don't keep the fan running).
