Fuente 858 Sungrown

I got a few of these babies from Aaron (Montecristo #2) a while back and decided to break one out of the humi and try it out. I'm not sure how long they've been resting, but it'd been long enough.:)

Setting: I was relaxing in my fishroom with the pooch, surfing the net, and listening to some Club Stogie Radio. I paired this stogie with a glass of my Wife's excellent iced tea.

Construction/prelight impressions: The construction was typical Fuente. Overall a nice looking cigar presented in a cedar sleeve and black wrapper around the foot. This cigar had a firm feel to it with an attractive, smooth wrapper and a well constructed cap. I clipped it with my Club Stogie Havana cutter and noticed a fairly tight draw, but not too tight, and a nice mellow taste and aroma.

Flavor/post light impressions: Upon lighting, there was a nice ballance of spice and sweetness with a hint of something citrus. I don't think I've ever noticed anything citrus-like in a Fuente cigar, but then again, it's been a while since I've smoked an 858. The taste throughout the cigar was very consistent in this profile and didn't really change, which I had no problem with. The spiceyness came and went, but was never overpowering, nor did it ever get too sweet. Just a nice mellow flavor all the way to the nub. This was a mellow cigar, but pretty darn good.
The burn was near perfect from start to finish and it produced a very nice amount of aromatic smoke.

Finish/Aftertaste: It started getting hot and a little harsh near the very end, but not too bad. I was a little dissapointed to have to give it up. The aftertaste was slight and pleasant, due to the mellowness of the cigar I think.

Summary: A hard to find cigar, especially at MSRP, but worth every penny of it's price......at MSRP. I wouldn't pay much over that for it, but it was a very nice smoke. Thanks Aaron for giving me the opportunity to try this hard to find cigar.

Overall I'd rate this a 7.5/10, which equates to a damn good cigar.

Man, I think it has been almost a year since I sent you those. I know I got them at Casa Fuente and I think it was during my Holiday run to Vegas last December.

I just found the thread, it was almost a year ago!

Man time flies, when I smoked one I wasn't that impressed, but I am not a huge fan of cigars from the DR, so I guess it makes sense. :D

Was that the only one you had left or do you still have a couple of more?

I am into fresh water fish right now, specifically US native species. I've got a few tropicals mixed in with 'em. I've got around 20 species or so in a 265g, 125g, and a 120.

I'm getting ready to start a small 10-30g tank and a 50g tank with saltwater soon. I'm gathering my equipment little by little. Saltwater can be expensive to do.

Thanks.

Fuente SG wrappers are one of the best Ncs on the market.

The price point is just great as well.

At one point I was running a couple of 1000 gallons of tanks. I've never done salt because of expense and time. Native sounds fun. Most of mine where New World. CA & SA cichlids. I like the big boys.

I tend to like bigger fish as well, but lately I've been digressing from that. I do have a Yellow Bullhead catfish that is about 18" long and an albino Adonis Pleco that is probably around 24".
