Does anyone else see a trend happening or at least small similarities with the attempt to eliminate smoking and that of prohibition? I sort of think that this could lead to bans on smoking completely which might then lead to outrage among smokers and such. I dont know Im just seeing similarities, no?

Politicians are not happy unless they have something to rail against. I see the same idealism that was around for prohibition. The cities were so corrupt, but banning alcohol would fix all that. Nowadays, There are kids and teachers getting shot up in school, teenagers making bombs in their PARENTS basements, 14 year olds TRYING to get pregnant, the drug war is being lost on multiple fronts, but they wanna stop me from lighting up within ten feet of a building? Don't make sense to me, and it don't seem right.

PS I didn't mean to say we would see total prohibition, just that you won't be able to smoke anywhere there are or may be children. So basically only in strip clubs and casinos.

Not only does the gov.'t make a LOT of money from the outrageous taxes on tobacco, but there are just so many other, BIGGER problems that need to be solved. There's no way tobacco could have an outright ban... it would cripple too many economies, and the reception would be overwhelmingly negative.

Too big of a Lobby. Too much $$$ in the industry. The Gov. Agencies cannot afford to take the hit as a huge Tax base would be gone.

I dont know much about this but what I assume your saying is that for prohibition there wasnt nearly as much money in alcohol then as there is in tobacco now?

Im just noticing a lot of BS happening with laws lately and fairly often that it doesn't seem to far of a stretch to see total smoking bans at least in public in the near future. I mean yes smoking is unhealthy but what is a free nation coming to if its citizens cant enjoy their lives freely?

But they have to toss a bone to the annoying lobbies they have to cater to for votes ie: Environmentalists, Save the Whales, Save the trees, save the spotted owl, Save the smokers etc. etc. etc ad nauseum. So to get rid of them they toss em some kind of meaningless legislation (or so they think) to keep em satisfied. What they don't realize is, by catering to extremists or zealots, they lose a little bit of their legitimacy in the eyes of their more rational constituents.

this is almost like masked words of comfort...its going to get worse but not as bad as you think, type of thing.

I know that the govt makes a ton of money from taxing us however for me the problem doesn't lie in acquiring the cigars it lies in having a place to smoke them. that is my worry. So perhaps a form of prohibition not limiting the purchase of them but the ability to smoke them.

Either way they're still fuggin with ya. And by doing so they keep the dogz off their backs and onto yours/ours (IMO). Just like in days of old, there will be bootleg operations springing up all over the country to "give the people what they want", ie: cigar speakeasies?? :D Where a man/woman can go chill, have a drink or two and relax with some music or widescreen TV and smoke their favorite cigar w/o being bothered by annoying cigar nazis. (it could happen).
