Good drink with Opus X

A buddy of mine just gave me a ten year old Opus X. I'm going to light it up in the next day or two. I usually smoke the first third of a new cigar with water then decide what to get after that. Anyone have any suggestions for a good combo.

Just my opinion, but as much as a good single malt goes with a good cigar I've found that a dark beer compliments it just as well. I'd go with a smooth dark beer like Negra Modelo, you might just find a new habit to go with your current one. :tu

Very true, grab a Guinness and pour a shot of single barrel Evan Williams in it, do it your own Bourbon Stout. Enjoy :ss

Depends on if you want alcohol or non-alcoholic. If non, then a nice coke would be great it would cut down the nicotine if there is a significant amount left after 10 years...which I bet there isn't.

For alcohol probably a nice dark beer, maybe a cream stout or a rich chocolate porter. You could go with a scotch as well...

Either way, enjoy that baby. I love aged Opus... Once they hit the 3 years mark....mmm... :dr:dr:dr:dr:D

I'd stick to a dark beer or Coke, Mexican Coke if you can get it.

I don't like scotch and cigars, a single malt kills my taste buds.

I've got plenty of Guinness in the fridge, so I think that may be the winner. I am a big fan of scotch but I agree with Darrell. It can be overpowering with a cigar.

This is very intriguing. I've never thought about adding whiskey to Guinness. How about scotch in Guinness? If anyone's ever tried this, please let me know. I'll have to do some pre-lighting experiments tonight when I get home.

Thanks for all the advice. Guinness was a great choice. I smoked it last night and it was wonderful. Next time, I'll try scotch and see what happens.

Nice to hear!!:tu

I rarely drink when I smoke but when I do, I like a nice dark stout or a rich smoky porter. :ss

I recommend Scotch Whiskey (Johnny Walker Blue :dr:dr:dr or Gold, Black), beer (which ever you prefer), or simply water (so that you may taste the nuances). Happy smoking :ss

I'd vote for a non-Islay single malt. Something like a glenmorangie or macallan or glenfarclas.

For non-alcoholic, I have been digging root beer lately, but plain old coke works as well.

Either way, enjoy the hell out of the Opus - they are great with some age.:tu

Looks like I may get to try everyone's advice. I told my buddy how much I liked the first one and he brought me a box with a few Opus X, a Trinidad, a Padron and a Davidoff Millennium.

Thanks, bigswol2, for the Crown suggestion. That finally got me to buy some and try it out. It is wonderful. The next Opus X will definitely get smoked with some Crown.
