Graycliff 1666 Torpedo

Evolving Lead Gorilla
I got a pair of these in trade as I've always wanted to try this brand. I clipped the first cigar and there were many strands of hair both in the Xikar and the cigar. Needless to say I tossed it. I still wanted to try it so I clipped the other one.

This was a pretty bad cigar and lasted about 2 inches before it was tossed. It kind of reminded me of the Rocky Patel Double Maduro but more harsh and less interesting. Construction was fine except for the hair in the first one. Burn was fine, amount of smoke, etc but it just wasn't an interesting or tasty cigar.

I checked the prices at CI and they are utterly laughable. $10 retail price...this thing isn't worth $1 to me. I won't be buying any Graycliffs in the future. I guess that's why we trade after all.

Sorry you didnt like them. Hopefully the others in the trade will be more suitable to ya. (at least the PSD 4 should be a winner if those legends arent)

The Partagas is a known quantity...one of my favorites. I just had a Legends yellow and it was pretty decent.

Thinking more about the Graycliff, I can't believe it was so terrible. I guess Graycliffs are like Gurkhas...charge an astronomical price regardless of quality and they will come.

I had a different vitola and thought it was tasty, but suffered from construction issues. I like to relax and read while I smoke so tending to a poorly burning cigar isn't worth it to me.

I think that the 1666 is Graycliff's internet only brand. While I haven't tried this line yet, the rest of their offerings are very good, if overpriced. If you can, pick up a couple of the red and the purple label. They can be had for a much more reasonable price off cbid.

I smoked one of these fresh and didn't get an inch in before I tossed it.
My experience with the last Graycliffs were Double Espressos. They were horrid when they arrived. Four or five months later and they were fabulous. For or five months after that and they mellowed so much I couldn't taste them.
I'll try them again later and see what I think. :tu

I tried one of these (from a prior maduro bundle from CI) and liked it so much I got in on the bundle of 10 from CBid. Sorry others haven't had the same experience.

Sorry to hear you had a bad time with them.

I had a 1666 recently from a sampler pack and had a very different experience. It was the best smoke I'd had in a long time. They're not worth $10 each certainly, considering how many solid/similar cigars are much cheaper, but I'll likely be buying more 1666's if I can get a good price.

Yep, I thought they taste pretty good, though I've had construction issues. But the msrp is ridiculous. The one's I've had cost me 3-4 bucks and I think they're well worth that money.

I got 5 of these in a Joe Cigar deal about three months ago. Of course like a green newb I had to try one within a few days of receiving them. I too thought it was not a very good smoke at all. In fact I was very unhappy with them. I tried the second one a few weeks later and I actually didn't think it was as bad as the previous one I had tried, but it was still a little on the harsh and unfavorable side.

That was a couple of months ago. When I look in my humi now I still have one left and overe the last month I would fire up one of the other two and either I am getting more knowledgeable or what, but they have been getting better with some waiting time. In fact the one I had last week was not bad at all.

I am going to let the other one set for a while longer for sure.

Still the price is really outrageous.

Check for deals. I just got a ten-pack from CBid for around $3 each, and that is a more than reasonable price. My neighborhood B&M gets about $10 each for them, and they're not worth that.

I first started out smoking graycliffs. I found the 1666 blend to be the most uninteresting of them all, including the way it was presented. I was bombed by Vin with the grand cru, blue label, and original. Also bought some of the crystal series and they all had better construction and were more pleasing to me than the 1666's.

I DO think they are better than the Gurk's though. Those all are way to pricey and seem to be made out of drift-wood.

I agree, and also don't like the Legends much.

I can't get enough of the Blue labels and Grand Crus though.

The Chateau Grand Cru is my all-time favorite from the Graycliff line, and probably one of the best three or four cigars I've ever smoked. Way too pricey for me to keep many around, though. I like the Pirate (torpedo) especially. After smoking a Grand Cru, I wasn't all that impressed with the Crystal. I have tried the original and it's a fine smoke, too.
