Gun Safe conversion to a Humidor...???

Anyone ever convert a fire rated gun safe to a humidor? It is kind of amazing how lackadaisical people are about safety of there cigar collection.

One small fire or thief and....

I can only think of one down side and that is weight. You could a fire rated gun safe conversion with all new products purchased at retail prices for less then an equal size quality wood humidor.

It is the only real "insurance" I can think of for some 5 and 6+ figure cigar collections.

Food for thought.

Also something to look into: what is the estimated internal temperature during a house fire for the fire-rated safe that you're looking into. One safe may be cooler inside than another and a gun can withstand more heat than a cigar without bursting into flames. Just my :2.

If you are a hard-core card carrying, gun toting Republican like myself it is beautiful!:tu

I hear yeah, but just for the same reason I'd want a glass gun display, I'd also want to showcase my sticks.

FWIW - I built my own glass cigar cabinet based on a design for a glass rifle cabinet (found in a woodworking mag).

Seems like there might be an issue with corrosion after a length of time at 65% RH. I try like hell to keep humidity out of my safe. I don't want my kids rustin' up on me.

Yeah but it would look ugly. Just my :2

I dont think this is ugly...

Expensive, yes.

All very good points that I don't have an answer to... Hoping that some one does. I would not put my guns:gn and my stogies:ss in the same safe. They both need very different care.:tu

the humidity would be a problem as well as the very things that make it a fire safe.
A wide variety of chemicals are used on these...odds are good that long term storage in this type of device will ruin the flavor of your smokes;)

Just buy yourself a big fan and if the house goes up in flames, stand out front, and let the fan blow as much of the smoke towards you as you can.

If you have 24 hour monitoring then all you really need is an automatic fire suppression system that can keep the flames at bay until the fire dept arrives. Even a wood humidor should be able to withstand quite a bit of water as long as it is not flooded. It would probably be ruined after that but if it keeps the stogies safe and dry that is the important thing.

WHAT??

I thought the solid steel was the fire proofing?

Very good points here. I have a Browning safe and it has a ton of rust on the cast parts inside behind the trim. I have a rod type dehumidifier in it, so guns are fine, but I would not want my cigars anywhere near rusty metal. I would recommend a wine fridge conversion. Cheaper value that a gun safe. Less expensive that a climate controlled custom humidor and you can always toss a big ass padlock on it for security. There's my :2

just an FYI - you would have to wait a little while, but it may pay off in the end. I have a liberty that I keep my items in - but know that you can get a SentrySafe from Wal-Mart. Decent safe, and can be had for pretty cheap at the end of (down in the southeast) Deer hunting season. Only thing with those - after looking at one in the store for a document safe - you would have to completely remove the carpeting / shelves, not just put S.Cedar in over the top as the glue that is used smells, well... like strong glue.

I can just taste the CLP and Hoppe's #9 in my cigars....
Hoppe's #9 one of my favorite smells. From my earliest memories. My dad was a BIG gun collector and shooter. I spent many of my childhood days casting or reloading or shooting or all. :ss

if you really want to convert a beauty of a gun safe into a humi i am sure it can be done with some work. S,cedar liguid nail, beads hygrometers, seasoning .
but i would rather go to target and get a vinotemp and be done with it.

Good Luck
