Had my 1st Rocky Patel last night.

Rocky did an interview a while back, I posted the link to it. In the article he describes the fact that after the success of the REO he wished (in so many words) he hadn't let the recipe blend go to the manufacturers. He said it was an excellent blend. So, he IS the REO but, it was just manufactured by someone else.

I knew someone would have the answer here.

I haven't tried the Rocky Patel 1992 but I have an order from CI that I should get this week. I've tried the RP Edge that was an incredible smoke. So far, I am very impressed...hope I won't be disappointed!

Last night I had my first Rocky Patel and was very impressed.

It was a Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 'The Sixty' (6" x 60) that came in a sampler.

The wrapper was dark, oily and smelled great. When I went to cut it, I found that my cheap cutter could barely get the job done (these are big).

The pre lite draw had a very slight resistance and tasted great.

I used 2 matches to light this cigar and noticed that it was easy to get a nice even light covering the large foot.

I was at once rewarded with a mellow creamy smoke but not the volume of smoke that I was expecting from this large cigar.

The first 1/3 burned evenly and built in strength but I did have a very slight wrapper split that fix itself in no time at all. The split was most likely my fault for not letting it rest in the humi after receiving it.

The 2nd third was still burning evenly and continued to build in strength but was still a cool creamy smoke.

My last third started to have a slight uneven burn but the flavor only got better. Unfortunatly I had to leave this cigar when I was barely into the last third due to a neighbor having problems with another neighbors brother who just happens to be one of the, ah hum, should I say stars from the TV show "COPS". Man I hate tweakers!

Anyway, I really liked this cigar and was not happy that I couldn't finish it. I look forward to my next and think I may have a new favorite.

What I had of it, I would rate this somewhere in the 8's

Take care.
Ken

Great review. I am a fan of RP 1992. I haven't tried the 1990, but I have tried the Edge Lite (excellent). You can count on RP for great constuction, a good volume of smoke and excellent flavor. Think I have only smoke 2 of the 1992. I usually order the seconds from CI since the flavor is the same.

Patel's I have known:
1990
1992
Edge lite
Olde World Reserve(Corojo)
Sun Grown

Indian Tabac(many)
Drew Estates(many)

All were great! I love Patels-try 'em.

While I knew about the association with Indian Tabac, I didn't have any idea that Patel had anything to do with Drew Estates. Interesting.

I've yet to try a Rocky Patel though I have an Old World Reserve I received in the NST resting. I'm a big fan of maduros so I guess I'll have to pick up some of the Vintage 1990s.

Nice review! I love the 92s; they have a taste I haven't found anywhere else.

I just tried a Old World Reserve that was good, pretty spicy. Definetly recommend trying one!

Rocky collaborated with Drew estates on the Java line. He says they are nice smokes. If you like maduros, I'm gonna go out on a limb here :D and say you will probably like the RP smokes....all of them :dr

I fired up a Sungrown last night and I'm hoping that I just got a bad one.

I'm going to pull the trigger on one of the Indians tonight and have great expectations.

Looks like I need to find some 1990's, Edge's and some Olde World Reserve's.

I got a couple of the Drew Estates in a Mikes Bakers Dozen which also include a Bolivar and Montecristo all of which I have never had before.

I do know for a fact that the 1992 has edged out the CAO GOL that I really liked and these 6x60's are where it's at.

Take care
Ken

Hell man! You can like em all!:D I am curious though about your experience with the sungrown. You are the second person who has written about a bad experience with them. This hasn't been my experience at all. And while I am not as crazy about them as I am about the Edges and both vintages, I do like them too.

Holts is out of the edge maddies. Where can I get a box???

Puffn:
I just called Holts, and they have some Edges in stock of the "off color" seconds. I ordered some missile maduros. Call 1-800-523-1641 to check with them.

From everything I've read. I think I just got a bad one or, with everything that has been going on around my neck of the woods, it could just be a state of mind.

I lit up an Indian Tabac last night and didn't get to finish it. That makes the 2nd cigar this week that I didn't get to finish because of this felon that is back in the neighborhood:mad:

One of the neighbors 28 time, convicted violent felon brothers has been hanging around the neighborhood and people are losing things. The Sheriff won't respond unless they have at least four Officers because they "are scared that they may have to shoot him". Two weeks ago it took six Officers to subdue him. When "COPS" came to Pierce County, he was the first arrest they filmed. He mutilated a cat, beat up his girl friend and went bazerk in his jail cell and it took four or five corrections officers to subdue him for that show. He keeps burning his trailers down while cooking meth and then lives with his sister until he can find another trailer.

So don't avoid buying a Sungrown because of my experience.

Sigh, don't the friggin cops know that if they don't do something about this guy, someone WILL shoot him. Isn't this why tazers are so useful?
Good luck with that.

I had one this morning....It was great construction, great burn....lackluster, not much to it. Reminded me of a Punch lite! :bx I was not that impressed with this one. Sheesh, my tastes must be changing ....:hn

I think the Cops are tired of the courts letting this guy off. He would have had three strikes and in prison for life years ago if they didn't keep doing plee bargains.

To date he only has one strike from trying to kill another sister and then threatening to cut her head off after throwing her off a high balcony into a river, just up stream from a 150 foot waterfall with a foot of snow on the ground and temp in the low teens. He got three months in a mental hospital and three months in jail for that one.

Anyway, back on subject, I loved the Vin 92 and will try the Sungrown again when things calm down.

That is one of my top ten favorite smokes.... it has yet to let me down.... i also love the edge maduro 1st run that i was lucky enough to get 100 of ... the sad news is that there are only like 40 left ...... thanks for your thoughts on this fine smoke .....:w
