Had my first Don Pepin Today

SilverFox

Seven Down 33 to Go
Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classico,

First off it was a very enjoyable smoke good flavour but quite mild. Plenty of smoke but this one seemed very one dimensional. In that it was the same throughout.

A couple of things I noticed right off is it seemed to smoke dry don't know if that makes any sense but it seemed dusty for lack of a better word. The burn was off as well. Smoked it right down to about an inch then it was just getting too hot so I let it be. The ash held strong throughout but was a bit greyish (not that it made a difference) at this point I wouldn't call it a go to smoke but it was enjoyable. It would be something I would share with first time or non regular smokers as I don't think it would knock them out but would expose them to a nice Cigar.

Now for the question side. Would the dryness have come from the cigar actually being dry? I got this in last week and they have been in my humidor at 65 to 68% since and it was only out three hours prior to smoking.

Has any every experienced the dustiness that I am talking about? Was the one major thing that kept this from being a really good smoke. I will leave the others I have to rest for a few weeks before trying again.

Any thoughts or inputs would be appreciated.

I can't say I've ever had a dusty tasting cigar but I have noticed that these cuban classics do produce a dry smoke. I always pair mine with a drink. Maybe with some rest you find them more enjoyable. They are one of my favorite smokes.

Not that it tasted dusty it was more the sensation the smoke left me with. And as I said it was a good smoke just threw me a bit the dryness. Maybe I will up my RH a bit in my NC box

From my experience, I have burn problems with my Pepins if they are stored over 65 rh, so they stay with my Cuban cigars.

wow mild?

These are generally a very tasty and full strength cigar, possibly your stick got dried out at some point of it's life?

I'd suggest another before ditching out on DPG, for a completely different taste, try out either the JJ or cabiguan, much different than most of the powerhouse pepins.

Store them between 60-65.

:tpd:

I usually dry box them for a couple of days and they are fantastic. I never thought they were mild though. Maybe the one you smoked has some age on it.

I also know about the dryness you are talking about, but I never get that from a Pepin blend. Sometimes, to me, it's almost a "paper" taste, again though never with a Pepin.

Try dry boxing them for 2-3 days, they will be awesome.

Talked to the DPG rep and VP at the B&M and they said to expect this smoke to have a dry finish. I had never heard that before but they were using it as though it was a saleing point.

DPG Cuban Classic (Black Label) is one of my favorite cigars. I like the 1970 Beli. Like everyone said... keep them under 65 rh. Also, from what you have described, IMO you had one that was dried out. These aren't mild and don't have a dusty profile. :ss

Thanks for the review Silverfox. I've had a Black Label a few months back or so upon the recommendation of one of our local B&M owners (who preferred this blend over the Blue Label). I found it a bit on the mild to medium body side myself with nothing really jumping out and hitting me in the face. Again, that was only one and I really do need to go back and revisit this blend once again to give it a fair shake (well, maybe 3 or 4 more times)...:cb

Thats it that is the perfect description of the sensation/taste I experienced papery.

I will give them a rest and give it another go..............this was definately a mild smoke though. I will move the rest in with my cc's and give them a month or so then fire em up again.

I have a JJ in my box from a certain Gorilla maybe I will give that a go tomorrow.

I am smoking my first "Black" as I type this, a toro. I figure I will do a sort of play by play or puff by puff review.

The first inch, honestly, was pretty unimpressive. It was all power and no real flavor. By the second inch it is opening up a little bit with some spice and the power has come down a notch. I love full flavored cigars--BUT they have to have "something" besides strength.

The finish is kinda short, which I must say takes away points in my book. However, the aroma of the cigar is VERY nice and the flavor on the exhale is very nice too.

Halfway point, the flavor is getting some complexity, with a slight tartness in the exhale and the aroma. The finish is still pretty flat though.

Just past the middle, and I am officially calling this "the cigar that could have been". Flavor and aroma are changing again to a sweet spice, but still almost no finish, no lip smackin' goodness between puffs.

Finishing up, this cigar has definitely made me curious to try other sizes of the line, and also to see what a couple years rest would do to them.

Mild? i'm not to sure bout that one. they always seem med-full to me. i always seem to get a nice blast of pepper up front also. as another CSer said, try switching up your beverage and maybe it will help the dryness you exper. water just wont do it with these. of course there are plenty of pepins to choose from so if the black wasnt what you were expecting, by all means dont give up....try the blue (JJ is good but IMHO, mild), padilla 1932, or a Tat!:cb

For me, not mild at all. In addition, I would also recommend that you let em rest a bit longer. I like these very much, and find them to be complex and well constructed. I keep mine at 65% RH in a humi with their cuban cousins.

The Cuban Classics are my favorite of the DPG line. I will have to agree with most here that I have not experienced a "dry" one, and I don't think they are mild either but, every ones tastes are different.

Walk away and try one on a later date. :2

This was definitely a medium to full bodied smoke. Loved the great spice notes that it delivered. Is a smoke I like to enjoy on a regular basis. Just can't go wrong with the cuban classic if you like a cigar with a little kick to it.:ss
