Haier Wine Cooler

Also, someone posted in another thread that Target has 28 bottle thermoelectric Edgestars (which is what I have) on sale for $149 right now--that seems like a pretty good deal if you can get it in store.

Man, the Vinotemp that I got there is also on sale for $149. Target has a 90 day return policy, anyone know if they do price adjustments for that long as well?

Bring your slip and complain. If they don't get a manager. They are on a customer service kick and should do it for you.

I guess the ethical question here is... if they refuse, do I just buy it at the sale price, and return it on the old receipt (still well within their return policy timeframe)?

Do these Haier units require temperature controllers like the Johnson A419 like a regular fridge would? How many boxes would you say fit in an 8 and 16 bottle cooler, since I think a 35 count would be a little too much for now in my opinion, unless somebody could please tell me how many boxes can fit in a 35 aswell????
much thanks

my 32 count Haier fit over 20 boxes in it. some of those boxes were cabinets of 50 as well (probably 1/3 of them were). if i had built my own cedar shelves instead of the wine bottle racks, that would've given me more room.

also, the Haier regulates the temp itself, no need to buy anything extra.

Wine coolers fit fewer boxes than you may think. My 28 bottle cooler is stuffed right now. It contains 6 boxes, 1 100-stick humi, 1 20-stick humi, and 1 40-stick humi. I don't think the 8 bottle cooler would be worth the money. I would just check ebay for the 28 count scratch and dent sales that often appear on there. Here's a pic of my 20-bottle Haier. I only have one shelf as you can see. Depending on what shape/size of boxes, I could fit a few more in there. There's 13 in there now I believe. HTH

Sort of. Mine, set on the warmest temp, stayed in the mid- to high 50's. That seemed to chilly.

My Haier is a 49-bottle unit and holds about 25-28 boxes squished in pretty tight.

Ended up having to use the return policy. I called and they stated 4 weeks to just bring in a receipt to price match (seems reasonable) so in order to get the sale price I'd have to do a return so that's what I did. It was very quick and painless. I'm a big fan of target and this only reinforced that. I liked walmart better back home, but here in this area I can't stand going into walmarts.

Glad it worked out and you got the sale price after all.

I've got the 18-bottle EdgeStar and I love it. It maxes out at 12-15 boxes. I'm happy with this size because I live in a small NYC apartment, and sitting as it does right next to my easy chair it's the perfect height to double as an end table. :D Better still, at its highest setting it hovers around 68-70*F. All I did to it was replace the metal wine racks with 1/4" Spanish cedar and install a Cigar Oasis and I couldn't be happier! Oh yeah, I won mine on Ebay for $100 shipped! It was a scratch 'n' dent, but the damage was minimal, only cosmetic, and to the back of the unit.

I got a 20 bottle Avanti. I know, get a larger one cause I'll fill it up. Well thats my way for stopping myself from spending way too much on cigars, can't buy more if I can't store them. Well anyways, i have right now about 6 boxes of cigars inside, and whenever the unit is on, the RH drops from 66 to 41. I plugged all the holes I could find, the drain the light, the seal looks good as far as I can tell. I'm using beads. Any advice?

That's the result of the compressor kicking on. The thermoelectric models are better for storing cigars because they don't use a compressor, so the only swings in RH are from opening the door to grab a smoke. My advice is, if you don't already have one, get yourself a hygrometer with one or more remote sensors. Put a remote sensor inside one of the cigar boxes. You'll probably find that the RH is far more stable inside the boxes. As long as the RH inside your wine coolidor returns to the desired level shortly after the compressor cuts off, and the RH remains more or less constant inside the boxes where the cigars are, you've got nothing to worry about. Celebrate by smoking something nice! :tu

I forgot to mention, it is a thermoelectric, but as long as the rh stays good inside the boxes then its cool.

Really? Well, I'm a little confused then. You said, "whenever the unit is on, the RH drops from 66 to 41." My thermoelectric is always on. The RH never fluctuates, save for when I open the door. Are you manually turning yours on and off? The problem you're describing is a common complaint among gorillas with compressor run models. I've never heard of such a thing with the thermoelectric variety. But, yeah, none of this really matters if the RH is constant inside the boxes, right? In any case, let us know how it goes. :)

After having read and re-read the first three pages of this thread I broke down and ordered an avanti 28 last week. I set it up last night and it is holding steady @62 F / 65% RH. I'd prefer it to be a little warmer but on balance since we don't really heat the house the ambient temps are <60 inside for several months a year anyway and my cigars have not suffered from that so I'll likely not invest in a controller.

Just got my cooler finished... thought I'd post it here since this thread gave me a lot of good info. I built the shelves this weekend out of birch and they turned out pretty good. Its a compressor unit, but its been working pretty well so far.

(PS: ignore the temp/% on this pic... it was sitting outside the cooler for 10-15 mins before this was taken ;) )

Now to work on filling it!

Very nice. A word on filling it up:

Think of it as a $9000 jigsaw puzzle whereby you have to buy the pieces one at a time at $300 each and you have no idea what the completed puzzle is supposed to look like. The guy who sells the pieces does not guarantee they'll actually fit in your puzzle.

Filling a cooler quickly or carelessly is an easy route to costly misfits and results in a puzzle with no meaning; filling it wisely, with careful forethought, should be considered an adventure in craftsmanship that could last for years and result in a work of art. :2
