Herf origin discussion

Ummm NO :tu

The term "Herf" used to describe the smoking of a cigar comes from the 1960's in America when many cigar smokers listened to Herf Alpert and the Tijuana Brass while smoking their favorite stogie. The music was latinesque and thus provided an atmosphere of semi-Cuban reminiscence. Soon, cigar smokers began to say things like "I was with the Brass last night and the Herf was so good I thought I was in Havana." Thus, we can all thank Herf Alpert for his influence on 'garbonics.

Ummm NO :tu

I think that says it all! NO!!!

The origins, my friends, are a lot different than you imagine. Let me take you back to San Francisco … 1848. They had discovered GOLD … GOLD in Sutter’s Mill.

John Sutter, found pieces of shiny metal in the tailrace of a lumber mill Marshall was building for Sutter, along the American River.[4] Marshall quietly brought what he found to Sutter, and the two of them privately tested the findings. The tests showed Marshall's particles to be gold. Sutter was dismayed by this, and wanted to keep the news quiet because he feared what would happen to his plans for an agricultural empire if there were a mass search for gold.[5] However, rumors soon started to spread and were confirmed in March 1848 by San Francisco newspaper publisher and merchant Samuel Brannan. The most famous quote of the California Gold Rush was by Brannan; after he had hurriedly set up a store to sell gold prospecting supplies,[6] Brannan strode through the streets of San Francisco, holding aloft a vial of gold, shouting "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!"[7] He was smoking a 2 cent cigar at the time and, at fishermans wharf, he was asked what he was herfin and hawwin about. Brennan held his cigar over his head and said “I’m herfing of gold” … and then dropped stone dead. Since an old Hawai'ian man named I'ce H'og was smoking a cigar close by, the name "herf" began to mean a get together of cigar smokers.

Not only did this start the Stone brewery, but since then cigars and herfing have been inextricably linked.

All this :BS is mind-boggling. The truth of the matter is, herf is actually an acronym for High Energy Radio Frequency weapons. These are are weapons that use high intensity radio waves to disrupt electronics. Terrorists are believed to be planning to use these weapons against our communications infrastructure. Not only can these weapons disrupt electronics, but they can pose grave danger to humans. Some common bio-effects of high energy radio frequency weapons include affects to the human central nervous system resulting in physical pain, difficulty breathing, vertigo, nausea, disorientation, or other systemic discomfort. These symptoms, as we all know, are quite similar to the effects we often experience after smoking multiple cigars in rapid succession. Thus the term H.E.R.F. gradually came to be used to describe the gatherings at which multiple cigars are smoked in rapid succession. And now you know the truth.

Seem you are the only one to wiki herf, however, I must add in the vain of Hog, wiki also notes;
"The factual accuracy of this article is disputed."

I was wondering if poker and I get any extra points for trying answer Bill's question in a serious fashion. I only need 3 more points to get a rubber chicken!

It is kind of amusing when you think how old smoking tobacco is and yet no one really knows why we call it herfing.
