How did you start smoking cigars

DoubleTrouble

Young Ape
My wife asked me if I thought most guys were cigarette smokers before they became cigar smokers. I think not but let’s put it out there for comment. How did you start smoking cigars?

I was never a cigarette smoker but I used smokeless tobacco in college. In the late 70’s, I was an offensive line coach at a university in the mid-west. After two a day summer practice one of the coaches gave me a cigar and it started from there. My father is a cigar smoker and I remember as a kid my dad would give me a quarter to go to the local B&M and get him two El Producto Escepcionales. I think they still make these. So, here we are 2008, I’ve been smoking cigars for over 30 years and just recently found this site.

I am into firearms and the firearms/guns combo intrigued me. On ar15.com we have a sub-fourm called "The Humidor". I started reading around in there and I was intrigued by the hobby. I started into cigars in May 2008 :tu This is an expensive, but fun hobby.

I had my first cigar at 17 to celebrate the ending of those hellacious SATs, but I didn't have a cigarette till I was 20 and still hardly ever smoke them.

I've known a fair amount of cigar smokers who were cigarette smokers before, but not the majority.

I've noticed a lot of AA guys smoke cigars and tend to hang out in the B & Ms as well. Definitely not the majority, but there always seems to 1 or 2 in any shops I hang out at.

Darn,I was just about to start a new how did you get started with cigars thread. You can never have too many of them...:D

My first was back in March of 2007. Some friends and I got some sticky fingers, root beer, and cigars and went on the side of a mountain over lookin a lake. Then I went to my friends house later that night passed around a RyJ and got drunk lol. Ever since then Ive been sliding down the slope and everyone but 1 other guy in the group like Backwoods

I'll be the first to say it.

First lesson on Club Stogie is to learn to use search......here are 4 threads on the exact same question. ;)

True, but to be fair, this is more of a conversational/banter thread than the typical Q&A threads that can be more appropriately searched. Some of the ones you found are years old and, besides--I might not care as much about those responders (or they're long gone...) :ss

To the OP, I never smoked cigarettes and got my first cigar either from a coworker at a business function, or from my brother in law on vacation. That was 15-20 years ago, so my age-addled mind is a little fuzzy on it. Either way, I never started smoking as frequently until I joined CS.

I started casually chewing Copenhagen when I was in junior high. I quit chew four years ago and some buddies at work got me going with stogies about three months ago. I was initially reluctant to smoke cigars because I thought it would get me hooked on nicotine again. So far it has not happened. Cigar history has always been interesting to me as well. I used to read about cigars long before I ever lit up.

Never smoked cigarettes, but took the occasional bong hit in high school.:pp

started a few months ago...visiting little havana in miami with my family, we stopped by one of the little cuban-expat smoke shops and picked up a few sticks. it's been downhill since then :tu

I smoked cigs for years. After quitting I still needed something to smoke, cigars fit the bill perfectly.

Without cigars I would never have stayed off those evil cigarettes.

I was doing laundry and needed something to drink. On my jaunt to the Circle K there was Habanos Torres calling to me. It's the siren call of cigars... I didn't smoke cigarettes before. I had enjoyed a Black and Mild with some friends, no longer thank god, and I had a hookah at the time, still do.

I have always chewed tabacco, but my college roommate, lives in So Cal and always takes me to this B&M. Double Trouble I coach college football in the Northeast. Would love to talk sometime

Like many, I smoked the occasional Phillies or Garcia y Vega from my teens into my late 20s. Then I had "that ONE cigar". The one that made me say, "DAMN!!! Those gas station glass tubed cigars don't taste like this!" That cigar was a Fuente Exquisito. That was around 5 years ago.

I never smoked cigarettes or anything, my first cigar was actually on the roof of my house on prom night to celebrate losin my virginity haha. It was a terrible white owl and I hated the taste but there was something about peacefully sitting outside and just smoking for an hour that I liked so I looked into getting some better ones and trying those out. I got a Padron from my friend's dad and it happened haha. I strayed away from Padron for a long time though because they were too expensive for me then, so I got into JR Alternatives and other cheaper ones until college, when me and my roommate got into it bigger and bought humidors and a few nicer boxes.

When I was of legal age, a long long time ago, I went to the local B&M and bought all of the tobacco products I could afford. I think my first cigar was a Middletons Cherry.

Been a "serious" cigar smoker for about 2 or 3 years, a bit before I stopped Cigarettes.

Now that I'm married, I have taken up pipe smoking. The wife likes it better, and I can smoke in the house...

Im still a cigarette smoker, but thinking about cutting right down/stopping and have more cigars! I gave up smoking for about a year, years ago until someone bought me some cigars (cheap hamlets) at christmas.I was smoking about 10 a day then got back onto the cigs!

I've never smoked cigs or chewed tobacco beyond a few drunken attempts. Over the years I had cigars off and on -- maybe once every few years or so. I've always liked the style of cigars and pipes and decided to finally break down and buy one of those humidor and cigar starter packs from Cuban Crafters about a year and a half ago. It's been downhill ever since with me setting up my new fridgador just this week.

I'm a collector by nature and, believe it or not, cigars are cheaper than some of my previous hobbies. Plus there's the added benefit of smoking the buggers which helps to keep the collection in a constant state of turnover.

I started smoking cigars and pipes because their history intrigued me and stuck with it because I enjoy the experience. Plus I felt it was my patriotic duty even as a life-long non-smoker to shout out a big "F You!" to the anti individual freedom forces on both sides of the political fence who seem hell bent on telling me how I should live my life. The surest way to get me to do something is to tell me I can't.
