How do you try out new cigars?

I am sure this thread has been done before but I couldn't figure out a search term that wouldn't bring back many pages of results.

Anyway... I greatly dislike samplers that only provide 1 of each cigar. I prefer to get at least 3 because it tells me everything I need to know.

2 out of 2 bad - no future order and last one may get tossed
2 out of 3 good - elgible for a single 5er order
3 out of 3 good - elgible for 5ers or box purchases

I don't like to do anything out of the ordinary to prepare my taste buds that I wouldn't do normally. I will avoid trying new cigars after meals that I will likely taste again like heavy garlic or spicy sausage. I usually don't smoke after a meal like that anyway because it tends to make things worse.

If I have ordered them online I usually wait at least 6 weeks if I get it from a b&m I won't wait at all depending on their humidor.

Cigars that need special handling (ie dry boxing) like the camacho triple mad don't usually make a return visit unless they are really great. I don't smoke enough to keep a dry box going at all times and even though I do dry box some I don't want it to be a requirement because of draw problems.

I usualy get 2 at least. One I try after it has rested, if I like it then I have the other when ever. If I don't I let the other sit for about two months and try again. Then I make my final decision.

I also like to get more than one to try because if I like it I want to know I'll get to smoke another!!! If I don't like it then I can try another to see if it was just that first one... or I can pass it on to someone who may enjoy it more than I did!!!

If they are really expensive or I want a box of ones I like then I let my wife buy them for me!!!:D

I might buy one at a B+M, then a 5er, and pass a couple out. Get some feedback and smoke at least two.

When I'm trying a new cigar (right now they're almost all new to me!) I pick up 2 of each cigar I'm trying from the B&M. I smoke one and if I like it I put the other one aside for trading. If I don't like it I plan to leave the 2nd one in the humi for a while, maybe 3 or 4 months, and try it again. So far I've been happy with all my purchases and haven't left the 2nd one laying around for long! :ss

I have been pretty fortunate over the years myself. Most of the ones I have tried have at least been fair (smokeable). Perdoma and gurkhas have been the 2 brands that have consistently delivered the negative results. I did have one really good gurkha but I am having trouble reconciling that against the bad ones (was it a fluke that one was delicious?).

I have bought many cigars(boxes, fivers, singles) based upon certain CS members opinions. I have learned who has similar tastes and who's opinion I can value and trust. :2

Ideally, I'd like to try 2 or 3 before making a final decision, but it depends on price.

Several months ago I bought two San Cristobal by Don Pepin. The plan was to age them five months, then my friend and I were going to smoke them on the first Saturday of college football season if both our teams won.

Well, we did win. My friend's victory San Cristobal tasted great and burned like a champ. Mine tasted good, but the draw was terrible. It was so tight it was like trying to suck a milkshake through a coffee straw. I'd love to try another one, because I think I'd really like the cigar, but at $9 a pop, I doubt I'll ever risk the money again.

Draw problems will get a cigar kicked out pretty fast.

I'll try 2 of each. If I like them then I'll purchase more. If they don't turn me off completely, I'll try them again at a later date. My tastes do seem to change as time goes by.
