How far down do you smoke your cigar?

When do you toss it?

I smoked an Ashton VSG Belicoso #1 last night until I burned my fingers. It was almost a holy experience.

I usually get to almost the end--especially now that I've been introduced to the world of purging. Purging really takes away the bitterness/harshness that I used to experience at the end of a cigar.

I didnt vote due there is no selection for: "till I dont like it anymore"

I've tossed cigars smoked less than 1/2" down and to the other extent I've smoked em down till I couldnt hold it anymore.
IMO, once the taste goes bad or Im not enjoying it anymore, its dumped.
Its not worth smoking even an Esplendido, Lusitania, etc. if it tastes badly due to being in a sick period or something.

I'm with you on this one Poker.

Last Friday I lit up a Don Melo Centennario Torpedo, Original Blend (they've been out of circulation coming up on 4 years). What the f--k, it was a miserable smoke. Tossed it after 1/2 an inch.

Now, I was still itching for a good smoke but was too lazy to get up & fetch another. What'd I do? Reached over into the ashtray next to me for a half smoked MC2 and a half smoked Padron Anni Torpedo, both of which had been sitting there for 5 days. Well, my deck, where I was smoking, has an overhanging cover which gives great shade, the weather's been ambiently warm, not too humid during the day but nicely humid at night. I tell you the cigars were ready to be smoked.

They lit up well, and burned well.

But best of all, they weren't bad at all. Both burned a little rough & strong, but the flavor profiles were still good and I smoked both of them down (alternating them) to nearly an inch a piece.

Dudes (& dudettes), that was the first time I ever aged cigars that way (LOL). Some of you have seen me unravel a burning cigar just to examine its leaves and their combustion so you know I'm capable of being a bit spontaneous at times. I tell you I was pretty hard core that night. :w :w

i agree with poker, but i voted for >1".
why? cuz most cigars i smoke taste good that far down.
now, if it's a non-cuban, most go off with >2" or more to go and i toss 'em.

I Smoke them till they burn or probably 1" left. I havent had a really bad smoke never and hope i never do.

most often about 2" left when i ashtray them..unless its a cj or short...then i may go a bit lower, but they seem to get too hot for me at 1 " call me a pus%y its o.k. :r

With Poker on this one. I have trashed a Diamond Crown Maximus because it was a miserably constructed cigar within the first inch. On the other hand smoked an Oliva O maduro till it was an inch and wished the damn thing had been twice as long to start with. If it stays cool and tasty, smoke it until you have to put it down. I am not enough of a fanatic to break out a roach clip so that is about my rule of thumb...if it burns my fingers, put it down. Frank B

I agree with what the majority view is -- It depends on the cigar.

Ideally, I like to smoke them down as far as possible because this means I am really enjoying the cigar and I don't want the pleasure to end.

I'm with Poker on this one. I smoke em til the taste starts to go away. If it's a good one I'll take down to 1-2" but if it starts to fade, out it goes.

Till the pain of burning fingers outweighs the pleasure of the cigar when its good and when the pain of wasted money is not as significant as struggling through the cigar when its bad.

It certainly does depend on the cigar.
I vote Party Short for the most nubbed cigar in the universe.

Now that I know, I'd have to agree :D

I smoked my first one Saturday and it got so short that I had to use the thumb and index finger of both hands at the very end!!!!

Bruce, if you do have a son what would his middle name be????.....Habana?

Age is the main determining factor of when a cigar starts to turn. Usually a half inch or so before the band. Sometimes aged cigars can smoke a little longer before they turn. I like to end a cigar on a good note. I don't see how anyone can smoke a cigar down to roach clip size.
