Most of the cigars I buy boxes of are under $150 a box. I generally don't buy a whole box of the more expensive "special occasion" smokes.

If it is something I really want, and assuming this is after I graduate, I won't have a price limit if I have the money to spend. Right now I don't have the money to spend. But I will soon.

I could see paying between $100-$200 for a box of smokes I really like. There's a lot of smokes in that range that I like. Bought my first box yesterday, Tatuajie Havana VI Angeles for $85 because I now have a coolerador to keep boxes in. The slope is getting steeper. :ss

I paid $600 for a box of '97 Cohiba Esplendidos and I still think that was a good deal, similarly $450 for a box of '01 Lanceros, but those were exceptional purchases. With all the great deals around, I have to think very hard before I spend more than $200 on a box.

Exactly.
Too early in my cigar smoking career to spend more than $5 - $7.00 stick or $100-$125.00 box.
Don't know if I would really be able to tell the difference???
My counter point, as a smoker who has only been at it a year and recently bumped up against a previously set hard limit, would be this:

It is quite possible over the last week or so I've bought a couple of boxes of smokes that were well beyond my meager palette. However I don't plan to stop expanding my tastes and as far as I know well kept cigars keep well. Some of these boxes, the chances to get them from a source you trust at a number you can live with presents itself rarely, you have to go when you can.

Don't get me wrong I'll smoke one when I get them, to see if I can appreciate them. And then after that they go down to rest a while, and maybe next year when they are even 12 months better I'd be at a place where I can appreciate them. Or the year after, or even the year after that. But at some point I will light one of these things up and be ready for the smoking that follows.

For my birthday I've set my sights on a vintage box (at least 15 years) of Cohibas. I'll consult with the sages of Mt Cigar to select the proper box from among whatever sticks are available at that time but if I have to go hard, thems the breaks.

Besides in June its my birthday, my wifes birthday, our anniversary and my oldest sons birthday. That is a lot of celebrating.

The right answer is relative to "how much" you start with.

Generally speaking, I think anyone who makes less than 50k a year and spends more than 5% of their take home pay on cigars should seek help. There are plenty of great cigars being made today that you can buy at $4-8 a stick. Should cover even the heaviest cigar smokers. However, if you only smoke 2 cigars a year and want to spend it on 2 Behikes go for it. Hobbies are meant to be fun and shouldn't have a negative impact on the rest of your life by sucking up a disproportional share of your finances.

Once you get into silly money territory.. well that's why it's called disposable income I guess. Why do people drive 100k cars when there are perfectly good ones for 25k that will get you and your stuff to the same place. The answer is.. because they can. (Not because they should)

nicholas...those 01 Lanceros were worth every penny...I wish I had more. The majority of my purchases are under $200 as well.

200 for me... I can't see myself breaking that limit.

I am curious though, Bryan, what line did ya cross...? :D

My humi is not big enough to hold an entire box.. Yes I know there are a handful of your wonder people that would be willing to keep it for me.. I would be willing to spend a $100 to $150 on the right box of cigars if I had the extra cash and the space for it..

I had to go with $400 because that is the most I have ever paid, but if I had more money I would definatly be buying some higher priced cigars.

Its all about what makes you happy.

You can spend or not spend. Whatever makes you happy.

I voted for the fivers and singles. I have purchased a few boxes (not over $100/box) but I enjoy the variety of smoking different blends. That being said, I have some favorites that I am considering making a box purchase and probably would limit my spending to between $400-500 for a box. But the one cigar that I am thinking of comes 50 per box.
Can you guess what brand it is?

I know what it is my friend!!!

I voted $400.-, just seems I've never spent over that, or even up to that.

BUT - I have this obsession developing, because some friends are soon going up to Vegas. I have this idea that I want a box of Casa Fuente, with the orange ribbons. Not just that they are good cigars, but they have an ambience, they conjure up an image of one of my favorite places to be.

They would run more than 400, but wouldn't it be a fine thing to have them slowly aging... Larry.:dr

I won't spend more than $100 on a box but there is a reason for that. I'm just a college student, I simply don't have the funds. Now if I were rich or even just had an income that could cover a $100+ box of stogies, then the sky would be the limit. And don't tell me I can use my credit card either, even that is close to maxed out (school, transportation, etc) :hn
Same here, wish I could, but i've got 3 kids and a wife to support on a teacher's salary. Nothing over $100 for now. Although I've been tempted to get a box of those La Aurora Preferidos for $269.

It's a relative question. If you make $20,000 a year then $400 is too much. If you make $400,000 a year it's probably not.:ss
For me it's a question of rarity, and how bad I want them.
