How Pepin would make the perfect cigar

From an article on Pepin in Cigar Aficionado Pepin described how he would create the perfect cigar as follows:

It would be a combination of Cuban seed tobaccos from Nicaragua and Cuba. The wrapper would be from Cuba. The binder leaves would be from Nicaragua. For the ligero tobacco in the filler, he would use two types, one from Esteli and the other from Jalapa in Nicaragua. the other filler components, seco and viso would come from Cuba, the former from Villa Clara and the latter from Pinar del Rio.

One would only have to imagine that he probably has already made this cigar, and boy would I love to give it a try!

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a nice stogie. It'd be perfect if it was like $100 a box. :D

This was the cigar he would like to produce if the Cuban market opened. I think cigars with Cuban leaf blended in might be some of the best value smokes, but who knows? Not likely it would be under $10.00 a stick.

Funny, I read an article by him saying Cuban tobacco was subpar and overated.......yet it is in his ideal stick. Interesting.

I wonder why anyone would want to ruin that great Nicaragua tobacco with that subpar overated Cuban stuff. :D

Can you provide the quote in context? I'm curious to read his exact words.

I do think "overrated" is a given, but not all things that are overrated are bad or even sub-par.

This would definitely be a "must try" stick. I would suspect his reason for choosing a Cuban wrapper is the very small or non-existent veins compared to the other wrappers currently on the market. :2

I read it hear - About a quarter of the way down the page.

Don Pepín’s Dream Cigar
In an interview Pepin was asked what tobaccos he would use to make his finest cigar. Would it be all Cuban? All Nicaraguan? He replied, “The wrapper would be Cuban. The binder would come from Nicaragua, as would two leaves of ligero filler. The seco and viso filler would come from Cuba. That cigar,” he says with confidence, talking about his dream smoke, “would score perfectly in anyone’s rating system.” Jaime Garcia claims, “Cuban tobacco is the best in the world, when worked properly. Nicaraguan tobacco is very close to the quality of the best tobacco in Cuba.” I think the Garcia’s tried to create that incredible “dream cigar” when they blended the Serie JJ, or come as close to it as possible sans the Cuban tobaccos.

It is arguable that Don Pepin is currently making some of the best smokes in the world today. His secret family recipe for blending and fermentation has been handed down generation to generation since his family’s beginnings in old Cuba. I for one am oh so glad he left the island. Thanks Jose for all these fantastic smokes. Keep em’ comin’ big guy!

I would like to see the context for Pepin's "subpar" comment on Cuban tobaccos as well. I have never heard that before.
