How should I spend $100.00?

I wound up with $100.00 extra cash for my birthday. Not a lot by any means, but I'm talking guilt free spending money that I can openly devote to my cigar hobby.

I'm a relative newb, and my current set-up consists of a 50-count humi fairly full of various smokes, a Colibri Firebird lighter, and a cheap but very functional cigar-store cutter.

I whether to get a bigger humi, Palio cutter, better lighter, cooler & beads, Tupperdor, just more cigars, etc., or some combination of the above.

I guess I could chip in a few more bucks if needed (shhhhhh). Help!

Pick up a cooler and some beads for around $80, then pick up four tickets to the sandbox raffle:

A better lighter is a complete waste of money. You need a good cutter but if you are happy with what you have I vote no on that as well.

More cigars is the only way to go. If you need some additional storage space get the cheapest thing you can to store the overflow.

Does the cutter mangle your sticks? If not, then it is fine. Does the lighter light? If so, then it is fine. Beads are da bomb (http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/ or other sources here) and coolers are a cheap way to get way more room. You should be able to do beads and a 45-50 qt cooler for pretty cheap, esp. if you can get an end of summer clearance. That should leave a small pile for sticks. Look around carefully and find some good deals. newhavanacigars.com, holts.com, and plenty of others (I think that there is a sticky on sources around).

If you lived in my neck of the woods, I'd give you my old, small (55 qt) coolerdor and I have much bigger ones now plus 2 vinotemps plus a 300 ct Savoy. Who knows, maybe someone will do a sticks for cooler trade with ya.

Whatever you do DO NOT BUY just to buy. If you do, you'll be amazed a year from now at how much stuff you own but do not use.

Why would he buy a cooler when he owns less than 50 cigars now? You can't smoke a cooler or at least you shouldn't.

Happy Birthday!!!:bl

Go with storage - cooler!!! Always a good investment then start filling it up!!!

BTW Rolando - If you belong to CS you will always need a cooler (or something larger) to store your cigars!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :bl

I'm in a similar situation; 100 count humi with various sticks, cheap cutter, etc.

What I wouldn't buy:

* Tupperdor: A tupperdor can be had for cheap so slipping it into the normal weekly grocery budget shouldn't be too hard.
* Lighter: The Colibri is nice enough for now.

What I would consider buying:

* Cutter, sampler of super-premium cigars, or ...
* A box of something I've tried and really enjoyed in a moderate price range (ie, $40 to $80 per box online). Take what's left and pick up as many premium sticks as possible that I haven't tried yet.

With a good humi and lighter it seems to me you're choice is between some quality equipment (cutter, humi, etc) or quality & quantity of smokes. In the end though, just enjoy whatever you get.

Just my two cents :2...

He said that the present humidor is pretty full. Buying another small humidor isn't a good investment if he plans to continue buying sticks. A cooler with beads is economical and gives good room for air circulation. Additionally, he can store cigars in their boxes/cabs should he decide to make such a purchase.

If he isn't planning to buy a lot of sticks, upgrading to a 300 ct may be practical or even buying another 50 ct. But the slope is steep and no one wants to see money spent that will be re-spent in a short while.

I've got pretty much the same set-up as you but also have a small 8-stick hard-case travel humidor which comes in handy and 2 travel cases (1 is a leather 2-sleeve and 1 is the hard-case 3-sleeve Xikar which I really like).

I'm about to buy a nice ashtray and thinking about what to do next. My humi's are full (the 50 Colibri & the 8-stick) and I do want to have more cigars on hand and also age them.

I'm considering a Coolidor myself but kind of want something nicer. The cabinets are expensive and I'm thinking about a Vinotemp ($150 plus shelves), both of which are above the $100 level.

I guess if I were you and you don't mind the cooler, it's a pretty cheap alternative to storing more cigars. And it leaves room for buying sticks on top of it.

Try the Quintero Robusto that got a 92 in CA this month. Pretty amazing for the $4 price and you can get a bunch of 'em with what you'll have leftover.

Yeah but now all he gets to do is look at a empty cooler full of beads until he comes up with enough money to buy more cigars. Not a very happy birthday. He has probably only spent $300 or so total on the hobby to date so spending a third of his initial investment on storage he may not need for quite some time seems silly. He should get more sticks and keep it simple for now. Like my buddy traveler said he can make a tupperdor pretty cheap.

Eh, good point. Also why I threw the Quintero recommendation in there so he could at least get a few of those to begin with but they will be lonely, that's for sure!

Another vote for storage, either a coolordor or another humi and beads. I know I can always find a bit of extra money to pick up some new cigars but it's the large purchases of cigar accessories that are hard to save up for. Spend $80 on a cooler and some beads and spend the rest on cigars. Then next time you want to splurge on cigars, you can buy boxes.

Indeed, there is more than one possible way to approach spending $100. :tu

I would say to buy some samplers to see what type of cigars you really enjoy and then when you have that somewhat figured out, start looking into more storage. You probably already have something you can use as a tupperdor if the 50ct gets too full.:2

He said his humi is full so it seems he needs more storage. Maybe a compromise of a pound of beads that will last forever and a cheap tupperdor that he can replace with a cooler when he needs it + $60 or so for cigars to start filling it.
