How to freeze cigars?

I agree with those who say it's a bit paranoid.

I always keep many boxes of cigars on hand, have for 10+ years, and have never had a problem.

I've left cigars in my sunroom all summer in 90-100 degree weather and not had an issue. I've left cigars in my garage boxed up for 4+ years and not had a problem.

I don't doubt that beetle problems arise as I see the same pics everyone else sees. But it's always those same few pics from vitolas.net that get passed around. Very rarely do I see any new ones.

If it makes you feel better then do it. But until I have to come back here and eat my words I'm not bothering with it.

I'll send you some cigars but I need to get a styrofoam container and a block of dry ice to keep them frozen.



Here is the reason why I would never willy nilly freeze a cigar. Any third grader in science class could tell you that water always expands when it freezes. When it expands it ruptures and tears cell walls. Maybe the damage is not normally noticeable but it still exists.
 
Warren I remember you posting something similiar to that in another freeze thread. I remember it because you are just south of me and it is very humid here in the summer. If anyone is going to have a problem it would be us.
 
Yep, everyone knows that tobaccoo beetles are a myth and that those photos of Andrews are photoshopped. :rolleyes:

For what it is worth I have seen numerous threads and pictures here from folks who thought they could not possibly get the dreaded beetles. As I stated earlier, your chances are slim to none if you keep a decent temp. but I would rather have a minor inconvenience than to try and restock. :2

O.K., now that we've got that out of the way, the OP asked HOW to freeze cigars, not WHETHER to freeze cigars.


Madurolover is a great friend of mine who believes in freezing everything. Great friend as I've broken bread and smoked cigars with the man. He chooses to freeze, and (for him) that's O.K.


I'm a reasonably educated man who believes that temperature control is necessary to prevent outbreaks. I choose not to freeze, and (for me) that's O.K.


Others have documented that they keep their cigars in a nightstand, just like they do in Cuba, and nary a beetle has been seen. And (for them)that's O.K....



Please keep it civil, fellas...

Seriously Ted, how can you not like olives?

To the OP: I will seal inside of 2 ziplock bags(some even vaccuum seal), then they go in the fridge for at least 24 hours. From there they go to the freezer for 48 - 60 hours and then back to the fridge for another 24-36 hours. Once this is done I will let them sit at room temp till they feel room temp to the touch. I then introduce them back into the humidor/cooler. I have never had any problems with my smokes using this method. I hope this helps and good luck on whichever option you choose. :tu
 
One other question about freezing ... cello on or cello off? :r

Just kidding. Actually I am interested to know if you guys recommend removing the cigars from metal tubes before freezing. The reason I ask is that I'd be afraid of condensation inside the tube as the cigar comes back to room temp.

I absolutly CANNOT tell the difference taste or apperance wise between the two and like the peace of mind that comes from freezing.

Maybe my tastebuds are not "refined" enough yet....

Let me make this clear. No sides are needed. None. Zero point zero.


I just dont' like to see a debate over issues that don't deserve debate.


Some of my best friends are freezers... I'm not... I'm not about to tell someone that they are paranoid for freezing. It's their choice.

Some of my best friends are far right winged conservative, but I'm not... I'm not about to call someone out for their beliefs. It's their choice.

Some of my friends are also far left liberals, but I'm not... I'm not about to call someone out for their ideology. It's their choice.



And, with that, I love this place. I hope that the original poster has learned how people freeze their cigars, not whether cigars should be frozen.




The original poster didn't want to know my opinion on olives... I figure it's a more original debate than the whole Freeze/Not Freeze, Cello/Not Cello argument.

Maybe I missed something but where is civility being thrown out the window? :confused: Everything I've read so far seems well mannered.

Being the OP seems to be new to cigars it's only healthy for him/her to get some some additional opinions on the matter. I know when I first read "tobacco beetles" I was like, "WTF!!!???" and got all nervous. Only after reading and asking around did I relax about it :)

(NOTE: the synthetic/natural debate can apply to more than just motor oil, but let's keep it clean, eh?! ;) )

I think a personal taste test is the only way to settle the matter for yourself. Take two identical cigars, freeze one as per instructions, then when the freezing/thawing process is done smoke both and compare. That's what I'm getting ready to do just 'cause I'm curious. :)
