Humidor recomendations?

I'm going to say it before everyone else does. Go bigger. You won't regret it. A desktop is nice, however you will soon run out of space and need something bigger. If your really not looking for something huge like a coolerdor, or cabinet humi then you may want to check out http://www.famous-smoke.com/cigars/search/humstats.cfm/inum/16307Footlocker
it should give you some room for a few boxes and singles and allow you to expand until you decide to make a big jump. BTW Welcome.
 
Aw heck, go ahead and get a vino, or something bigger. I started my slide down the slope about a year ago. Started with ziplocks with paper towel dampened, then bought a 100 ct. desktop, then a vino. I love the vinotemp, but you will need something bigger sooner than you think. :2
 
A big honkin' cooler comes to mind. :ss But do you really need all that food? Convert your fridge and start eating out!:chk
 
I would recommend looking at N2Adventure's cigarmony.com's selections (Mark is a member here) before dealing with Thompsons. :2
 
It's been said before and I'll say it again, go bigger than what you think need, get something that is big enough for you to hold what you think you'll get than go bigger than that.

Looks like a nice humidor.

Against what others say, I would go for it and be rather selective with what cigars you put into it. Do not go the route of bundles or sounds like a good deal kind of cigars. They will sit there forever and be a waste of money.

Spend the money on a couple boxes of good cigars; just store them and enjoy. This humidor holds 100-125 cigars which is plenty to get you going. You should "graduate or earn" a bigger humidor, and that point you'll know whether you want that commitment or not. For many life long cigar smokers, your humidor is more than enough.

Save the money for Habanos, Pepin's, Fuente's, and Davidoff's...
 
Never dealt with Thompson, but after reading some threads, it seems like you would want to find another place to order from

There are also many happy customers. When you are the biggest, there are always going to be a few that have negative opinions. If the humidor is in stock, you have nothing to worry about. I would call them ahead of time to make sure they have it. I have only ordered from Thompson 2-3 times in 12 years, but each time went without fault.

Their Thompson branded cigars are lousy no matter how delicious they describe them.

I agree with the Admiral,

But:

Make sure that you take your time to buy a Desk Top that you like. The slope will eventually get you and even though I have a cooler and want a vino I still use my first desk top I bought daily. I keep a few of each sticks that I want in it and keep it at a RH 65% with beads from Shilala, there good stuff..
Wants and needs are 2 different things.I have a 3 desk top humis a glass top, burl wood and a tiger wood finished humi and I like each one for a different reason. I keep 2 at 65% and one at 60% as a dry box. I also had to wait for each purchase until I had the budget for it and my wife said yes to my weeks of crying and moaning:ss

I had ordered from Thompson, and aside from getting a new catalog every 3-4 weeks they've been no problem for me. There was an issue with the humi (described in the review), and Thompson offered to return/exchange it, shipping on their dime. I kept it as I like it.

Yea - eventually, you'll run out of space in it if it's your only storage. But it's really nice to have a desktop for singles that you'll be smoking on a day to day basis. I like this one quite a bit. I probably keep about 50-70 sticks in it*, and I don't use the humidifiers that came with it. I just use a Xikar jar in there right now, and when I get back from a long weekend next week I'll be ordering some beads to replace that with.


ETA: * it really isn't enough space for the long haul. I bought it and here less than two months later I have a 34 quart cooler that's in trouble also. But the humi is still great for the singles you'll be smoking.

I read the review a few days ago. Thanks! I have already decided that if I get serious enough to fill a 100-150 humi I'll just go with a venotemp or a cabinet. Wife and I will have the house up for sale the first of the year so we could see buying new "furniture" then.


Question: Is there any reason not to have a Cigar Oasis over beeds? Looks like everyone uses beads over an "active" humidification system.

Other than needing to provide power to the Oasis, and other than counting on it not messing up you mean?

I'm gonna guess here, but I think an active system will only provide more humidity, or shut down till it's needed. The beads will work both directions. If the box gets too humid, they will draw in and absorb the excess.
 
I just got a new humidor. Thought about buying the Xikar jar for it. If I do that can I keep the humidifier that came with the humidor or just take it out

I don't use any of the humidifiers that came with mine. I only use the jar.

Soon, I hope within a couple weeks, I'll be gutting one of the larger humidifiers and replacing the sponge with beads. Then I'll switch over to that from the jar. The jar works great, but it's 70% rather than 65%, and as far as I know it won't remove excess humidity from the box.
 
Ditto.... I have a coolador for mass storage. Go big here.

But, I still have a burl wood humi and a smaller humi for "presentation" if you will for the "next" cigars to be smoked. The better off BOTLs can buy the Aristocrats, etc (yea for ytou guys) but the coolador works for me and I get to have something nice on the desk. The coolador does help keep me honest, if it gets to full, more bombs have to fly out :) and that's just fun.

Mine is here except mine is the 50 ct model
