My final class before I get my degree is speech. The assignment that I am doing now is an informative speech, I chose cigars. That idea went over so well that I decided to try to push my luck and say, “well since my speech is on cigars we should go outside and try some.” I figured my genius would be met with dirty looks or a flat NO! “That is an outstanding idea, I love it” she said. WOW! Now we get to spend the class outside smoking a cigar. I was extremely excited until it hit me, I have to put together a 10 minute speech on cigars, and I am having a huge brain fart. What topic should I choose? Any ideas from the jungle would help out immensely. Thanks to everyone in advance.:ss

Talk about the brotherhood cigars creat, the enjoymen, and relaxation cigars bring you.

Also way to go on turning the typical class into a class Herf.:tu

I imagine you could do a 10-minute presentation on the construction of cigars. You could discuss the different wrapper options, and have visual examples of each. Then, you go outside and smoke to celebrate your impending "A."

AWESOME!!

Go all out, explain the difference in cigar tobacco versus cigs, fermentation process/aging, maybe some history of the cigars... the different flavors, spices, and such that can be had by them... if they're not opposed to a PPP, you should pick up a gas station cigar, and something pretty decent, say a good padron, or Hoyo, then show them the construction differences, right way to cut and all that jazz, why you might toast the foot, and go for it... if you have some cash then hell get a few yard gars and a few decent ones and go for it. Shouldn't be hard to do, with your 10 minutes part of it will be the cutting and lighting, that's what, a minute right there? So you're down to 9 minutes of speech. Just talk to them like you would a friend who you're schooling on cigars who had a punch and decided those cigars at the gas station in the brown plastic tubes suck.

Hope that gives you some idea's.

i did the same, about how cigars are made, why cubans are different, and how to spot a fake. lemme know if you need any... hmm... assistance finding sources, i'll see if i saved mine

stearns

You might also want to throw in some information about how cigars are less harmful than cigarettes, that kinda thing. The general consensus of the average person is that they're ridiculously bad for you, as bad or worse than cigarettes. Obviously it's not like your doctor is prescribing you to smoke a cigar a day or anything, but you get what I'm saying.

Very cool idea though.

:tpd: I was thinking about the history of cigars, and the tobacco history in this country. But he's got a great idea of explaining the difference between premium cigars and gas-station ones, and cigarettes even.

I vote for the history and construction of cigars as well. I don't know if I'd discuss the better than cigarettes benefits other than during the fermentation and aging process being all natural. (maybe even organic? - nah, that'd make them more expensive)

Just my two hundreths of a buck.

Maybe I can help some. Many years ago at a managers' meeting a friend of mine had to give a sppech/presentation. At the beginning of his talk, he wheeled a very large cooler of beer and proceeded to give eveyone in the room an ice cold can. Needless to say we were thrilled, thanked him opened our beers and waited for his presentation which went like this:

"I appreciate your attendance, thank you for being here, I hope you enjoy the beverage while I speak. When I handed each of you the beer, without exception each thanked me and you are very welcome.

If I would have done the same thing with the people I manage today, I would have heard, "it's not my brand", "it's not cold enough", "can I save it for later", "I don't like beer". That in a nutshell explains the challenges I face as I manage my employees who at times border on dysfunctional..."

The talk wasn't about the beer at all. It grabbed our attention and became an metaphor for the trials he faced as a manager. Clearly a memorable speech as I heard it close to 14 years ago and still remember it. I can't remeber a single one since.

So, think hard, see if there is something other than the cigar as a topic of importance, anticipate the audience reactions and play to those to make a memorable speech. And finally drill on it until it is a drone going on in your head. Having total knowledge of a subject will make you a better presenter.

Let's see now, informative speech thought starter brain storming:
Legislating Morality
Governance by the Majority
Bad Science as it relates to Cigar Smoking
Intollerance in the Age of Political Correctness
Sexual Sterotypes and the Changes in Those Stereotypes
or anything else,
forest fires
successful business model/plan
the making of mathsticks
etc. Make it fun, do your homework!!!

I am assuming this is college and not high school, otherwise your teacher is not cool, she is legendry!

OK, all the topics have been covered, although, if you really want to get fancy, you can discuss sustainability, cigars bringing jobs to poor 3rd world countries (I read somewhere Drew Estates is like the 1oth largest employer in Nicaragua)... with all the great suggestions from the guys, you should have enough for a weeklong seminar series man.

Ok, I was an English teacher and am now a prof. Here is an idea. Your speech will be broken into 2 parts. First part, the construction, types of cigars and how to cute and light cigars. You bring everyone a cigar, matches and/or lighters and cutters to pass around while your informing them on the type of cigars and how to cut and light them...everyone will do it.

The second part of the speech will entail the history of cigars. Start with Columbus finding the Native Americans...then go to the English transforming cigars to a status/club thing...then to America smoking cigars...then the embargo...then today.

Practice the speech. If you have extra time add a section where you explain the different kinds of tastes of cigars so you can help the students understand what they are smoking.

Could be crazy, but would be fun and win you points.

Looks like you have plenty to go with here. I would make sure to get a dig in at the anti-smoking cartel and explane how they want to mess up all our fun for no good reason other than to stick there nose in where it don't belong. It would be great to see a video of your finished speach.

I wouldn't use a lot of hard words and facts in the speech, don't spend forever explaining the different types of wrappers/sizes/flavor undertones.

Also it would be a lot of fun if the class could go outside and smoke cigars while you give your speech

I second that. Make the speech outside while smoking, if possible. How big a class? If financially feasible I'd bring in a small swisher for everyone, and then a real cigar (although depending on class size this could be a bank-breaker. Sancho Panza Double maddies come to mind...) to show the difference in quality, and value per dollar. Then explain the difference between a gas station cigar/cigarette. You can't rush a cigar. It ruins the flavor, defies the point of a quality smoke, and it wastes the $2-15 you'd spend on an average-semi-premium stick. Talk about the relaxation/stress relief it brings to those who enjoy the craft, respect the skill/labor that goes into each and every hand-rolled cigar, and why it's so much more than just smoking. I've heard there's a statistic that those who smoke 2-3 cigars a week live longer, on average, merely due to the lessened stress in their daily lives. That could be a complete fabrication, but if such a statistic exists it could be a banking point on why it's so much more than just smoking. Either way, I'd assume you're going to do fairly well just for how original the presentation will be. If you can pull it off, there's going to be quite a few people who'll never forget what's likely to be their best day in class.
