Young Chimp
I'm very new to cigars and i have no idea where to start or where to end. I was wounder if you guys could maybe tell me where i could start or some names of cigars that are good for a newb like me.

Make sure to introduce yourself in the New Gorillas forum. This is a pretty loaded question considering the immense amount of cigars out there. However, I would start mild at first. The first thing that comes to mind is a Carlos Torano Casa Torano. Very mild, toasty flavor. Other popular brands are Macanudo (overpriced IMO) and Don Diego. Check out the Big Cigar List for Newbies sticky as well. Welcome to CS!

My first purchase was an Arturo Fuente sampler. Many of the online venders have sampler packs. This is a good way to try different cigars,

Here's the link to that sticky for the cigar list: http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=29252

I wouldn't get into the maduro cigars until you get a little taste and tolerance built up--some of the maduros can knock you out of your seat. The way I started was finding a local cigar shop and talking to the fellow's in there. I picked up about 3 or 4 cigars they said were pretty mild (one of the A. Fuente's I think I picked up, Cusano 18 also). Before you know it you'll find what you like and even suggesting cigars for other n00bs on here!

Sample Packs are a good start. Remember that everyone's palate is different so, if someone likes something that you don't it doesn't mean you're crazy. (well it might - but for the sake of this dicussion we'll presume you're not)
:ss

singles, 5ers & samplers helped me to figure out some that i liked-check the retailer list too & sign up for the catalogs-most of them tell you if the smoke is mild, med, or full-your local shop is a good start too, just tell the man you're new & any you've tried & liked, he should be able to suggest some others

Also Famous smokes usually has some good sampler packs on sale as well, also since it was pointed out already, Do not forget to check the newbie stickys.

You might get lucky, like me, and find that there is a cigar store (B&M) near where you live that has someone who will take you under their wing and teach you a lot about various cigars and walk you through the humidor and not go directly for your wallet.

They are out there and I believe strongly if you introduce yourself and try to stay loyal to them, the payoff will be great.

Welcome to Club Stogie, blacklagoon. I would like to echo the sentiment that you should post a introduction as well, New Gorilla Forum

The question you ask is very similar to the following:

"I want to try wine for the first time, what do you recommend."

or

"I just got my drivers liciense what kinda of vehicle should I get."

Figure out what you might want to try. Do you want strong flavor or light? Do you something strong with nicotine strenght (ie. put you on the couch for an hour or two) or lighter? How long to want the cigar to last, as little 1 hour or up to 3?

The few people I know that just started or only smoke once or twice a year tend to go with light flavor and nicotine with about an hour or less for burn time. Macanuedo's seem to popular, though I don't care for them.

I would suggest one of two paths to start out with once you have an general area you want. Any good shop should be asking what you like before recommending anything.

1) Stop at a local store and see what they have. Buy one or two sticks.

2) Hit up some of the online sites like famous-smoke.com or cigarinternation.com for one of their samplers. I picked up the medium-Full from CI and like what I have tried from it. In the retail section of this forums there are some "codes" for cheap samplers from CI.

I don't have alot of experience to offer blacklagoon but I can tell you what I did. I got a chance to get to a B&M and it was an awesome experience. Big walk in humidor and a chance to see many of the things I had read about while lurking here. The person was very willing to help and spent alot of time talking with me and we picked me out a few sticks to try. Overall, well worth the trip to do it.

I started out feeling like a doofus due to my lack of knowledge, but they were very helpful and I left w/ a much better understanding and the beginning of a good relationship established.

Thank for all the info. today i went to my local B&M store and it was a good experience i walk out of there with two sticks.
1) Cuseno P1 cigar
2) Cuseno M1 cigar

I echo the sampler pack. I statred with the CI med-full and that was way too much. The stickies recommend mild to medium first. (found CI before I found Club Stogie)Also there are good stickies on all of the forum headers.

Welcome . . .

Fuente and CAO's are good starters. Go to your local shop and buy a few of each . . don't buy any duplicates. Keep the bands of the ones you like (or all but make note of the ones you like) and buy more. Ask the shop or this board what compares to them . . you'll get the hang of things . . .
