Just want to share....strike one....strike two

BamBam

Ya Damn Right
I headed out onto the front patio this morning to enjoy a cigar with some coffee. This is my favorite place to smoke. It overlooks the 18th hole of my favorite golf course. The view is of multiple ponds and streams with trumpeter swans and their new chicks. Also their is the view of the frustrated golfers finishing up the most challenging back 9 in our area.

Anyways, I lit up a RP Vintage 1990. I had high hope for this one. The first puff was very chocolatey and I thought to myself, this is gonna be good. I was wrong, from there out it was horrible, I even tasted a chemical taste. I only smoked it about 1 1/2 inches before I let it die a noble death.

I then thought to myself, I have to smoke something to make up for that. So I went for my first ever Don Pepin Garcia, it was a Black Label Cuban Classic Perla. This was gonna make it all better. I lit it up, and, it was not what I expected. The best way I can explain the taste was "musty walnuts" and I hate walnuts. It almost tasted like a Ecuador Sumatra Wrapper, which I don't like. Some research revealed it has a Habano Rosado Wrapper, never heard of that, but I don't like it. The flavor reminded of a Villiger I once had, and didn't like. I only smoked that one about an inch, and let it die.

So that was it, I was done, I wasn't lighting another one.

If you made it this far, the conclusion is, I am done with Rocky Patel's (had a RP Decade 2 weeks ago, $10 that would have better been spent on 3 Jamaica Golds).
As for the Pepins, this was my first true experience with this line, so I won't write them off yet. A BOTL here sent me 6 Pepins so I can't wait to try the others.

I hope my day improves.

I'm with ya on the RPs but give the Pepins another shot with a clean palate and all will be right!!! Great smokes IMHO

Definitely giving the Pepins another shot, I didn't clean my palate after the RP. RP's just aren't for me. In fact I don't respect RP b/c they are coming out with another cigar every other week. I don't really resperct that. I respect the Arturo Fuente's and the RyJ's and brands that make great sticks, and stick with them. :2

That sucks man. I hate to hear that since I just bought a box of RP vintage 1990 and 1992. dammit! Havent got to try either of them but now I don't really want to.

Wow, soinds like a harsh morning, but I do agree that smoking the two back to back could have harmed the taste of the second. But hell, the days young and you could always try again later right?

I never smoke Pepins line of cigars in the moring unless I've eaten a big breakfast. I love all his stuff though. To each his own. I smoked a RP maduro that I disliked the other day.

did you brush your teeth just before you smoked?

not really being silly, but sometimes I get nasty tastes smoking soon after brushing my teeth.

I guess the morning breath/taste would be persistent also if i didnt brush my teeth and smoked.

Anytime (I really mean any time) I have had two cigars back to back the second one always tastes off for at least an inch. Sometimes it tastes downright awful.

Tried a RP 1990 Wed. night while sitting on the beach with a campfire. I smoke a nice La Flor Dominican and followed it with the RP and realized that the two cigars DO NOT compliment each other. Almost and bad as the Joya de Nicaraqa followed by a Oynx.

Sorry to hear of your chitty experience. Give Pepin another try, possibly another size stick. The Black is one of my favorite Pepins and I absolutely love the Beli as that thing just oozes with flavor. Never had the perla so I can't speak for them but sometimes the smaller sticks just pack more power than flavor. Kind of how I felt about the Illusion. Also, not sure what Rh your keeping them at but Pepins like to be kept at a lower Rh like 65%, plus if it was fresh it may have needed more time to rest.

with you on the RP (posted my review a few days ago), but the Don Pepin Cuban classic black label is an awesome cigar. Unfortunately not available on the Dutch market but I was lucky enough to try one from a friend who got a box from the States.

Not a large fan of the RP's either but I've had a few really good 90's and I like the Edge for the most part. There definately not for everybody. As for the Pepin's I've liked everyone I've had. Some not as much as others, for instance Blue Labels and Old Henry's I like alot and have smoked several of each in various sizes. Old Henry's need to sit a spell in the humidor though. Don't give up on em BamBam.

I have given up on Pepin's. The only one's that I will smoke again are the San Cristobal and Tat Corojo, and that's only because I have them on hand. Most of his I toss before the 1 inch mark.
