Kauai Cigar Company

I was wondering if they grew tobacco on the islands, it would make sense as they do have very rich soil. Until this thread, I did not know if the farms were even there. My curiosity piques some more.

This all I could find on it.

Indeed, I found nothing on Hilo or Maui and only one “cigar shop” on Kauai: Kauai Cigar Co. For those of you who might be excited to know there’s at least one cigar store on Kauai, I should tell you that Kauai Cigar Co. sells a whopping two cigars: a “light” and a “dark” variety of a cigar called the “Island Prince” (roughly a toro in size with an ultra smooth wrapper).Having cornered the cigar market on an island with 50,000+ residents, I guess I wasn’t surprised when the clerk told me these gars were a criminally expensive $12 each. I bought one “light” cigar, despite the fact that I was totally desperate at that point (day 8). I’d say it was “not horrible” for a cigar that’s supposedly comprised of 100% Hawaiian-grown tobacco. (Remember, they don’t even sell cigars on Hawaii, so it’s not like the place is known for having really good smokes.) But it was far from great, either. I would rate it a solid 7.0 if not for the price, which makes it about a 5.0 on our Leafytimes.com scale.

Never tried the Cigars, but I tried the Coffee and drove right through the Blair Estate. I did prefer the other islands to Kauai. I'm an Oahu guy myself, but I also like Maui.
Only know of a couple tobacco stores on Oahu.

Don't know about most other islands but Oahu has some cigar shops. They're pretty much all off the beaten path.

Anyhow, I have indeed had one of these cigars this past May. However, I knew nowhere near the amount I know today about cigars. Actually, at that point I literally knew nothing other than having had a few here and there since February. Mine was in a single cigar wooden coffin box and was the dark wrapper. I'm nearly certain now that it was not humidified to normal smokeable conditions, but I didn't know jack then and smoked it. As a result, I thought it was pretty poor. However, I'm much more curious to pick up another or two now that I have my own humi and know better. I believe I paid somewhere between $9-$12 for it. Silocigars.com has them between $9-$11:

On the Big Island, I found 2 shops without looking too hard. The King Kamehameha Mall has a small liquor store with a small cigar selection. On the north tip of the island, in a small town called Hawi, is Mother's. They had a nice selection, though still a bit small. They had some of the Island Prince brand. I bought and smoked a couple, but did not care for them myself. All cigars I saw were very high, due to both Hawaii's tobacco tax and the cost of shipping them there. Mothers's did have a house brand, rolled for them by Oliva. I bought one, and am holding on to it for New Years.

There are some Islands resident gorrillas here, and they have posted about B&M's on the islands.

On the Big Island, there's Tim's Great Cigars in Kona. It has a decent selection for a small store, and they also sell some cigars they roll themselves.

I respectfully disagree with you. I was in Hawaii a few weeks ago and spent almost a week in Maui and a week in Kauai. I without a doubt preferred Kauai over Maui by a long shot. Kauai is SO much more green and scenic than Maui. Also, it's not as tourist-y. You don't find yourself tripping over some cheap t-shirt shop every five feet.

I did notice a lot of Hawaiin grown cigars in various shops in Maui and Kauai but I never bought any as I had brought some with me. If you happen to try any please let us know how they are. :tu

I didn't like that blog post when it was made. I just wanted to throw that out there. I'm not one of the guys who flamed him on his own site though. Seriously, how do expect to "find" a cigar shop by driving around? Yellow pages... I digress...

I've had one of the "light" cigars. Truly, it was awful. It was only in the humi for about a week, so maybe that's not fair. It made me nauseous, and not from nicotine. I emailed their sales rep about a refund/replacement but haven't heard back. My friend has two of the dark in his humidor. We're going to let them sit for a few years before we revisit them.

$9 is a great price on those too, relatively speaking. They're about $18 at all the tourist shops.

They were $15 at Mother's. The salesgirl (owner's daughter) said she likes them a lot. Maybe, just maybe, I didn't give them a fair shake. Someday I'll smoke another one. I hope it really is good next time.

+1000 Being in California the Islands are our 'go to' vacation spot. I love Kauai for the green and slower pace of life. Maui is okay but if you want to put the breaks on life, Kauai is where it's at.

Interesting info on the smokes, thanks!

I use to live on the Big Island, so the rest of the islands don't do it for me. Especially Oahu. For those that have never been to any of the islands I highly suggest they stay away from Oahu. Go to Kauai, Maui, or the Big Island.

I will have to make sure I bring my own next time I go back.

Hmm... well I've been to Oahu (4 times) and Kaua'i and while I love both I prefer Oahu. Oahu is great because it's developed yet still has the natural beauty and get away spots. So, you can get any kind of food you want, any kind of beer, etc if you just look for it. You have pretty much all the amenities of home yet you can also enjoy nature with a short drive or bus ride. Kaua'i is gorgeous, but it's quite isolated. Don't expect to easily find a fine Sushi restaurant right around the corner. Heck, I couldn't even find a place that sold binoculars! I was told I'd have to drive 30min or more to Walmart. I did manage to find my favorite German beer on the resort we were at in one establishment on grounds which was awesome. Another thing about Kaua'i is the waters are much more dangerous. Swimming is strongly cautioned against due to much stronger undercurrents - not so with Oahu. Anyhow, that's just my :2
