Keeping different cigars from touching

Cellophane is not plastic, it is plant pulp, and it breathes.

I'm not one to rely on wikipedia as the final source of info, but under that particular definition of cellophane, it is claimed that "Cellophane's low permeability to air, grease and bacteria makes it useful for food packaging."

So while it may breathe, it may not breathe to the extent that all cigar smokers would wish. YMMV. :tu

There is no reason to remove cello, except for aesthetics... and your cigars don't care. :)

Store your cigars the way you received them from the manufacturer, in the original packaging. If the cigar came in cello, keep it in cello. Cellophane is not plastic, it is plant pulp, and it breathes.

As for the cigars touching, don't lose any sleep over it.

:tpd:

I remove the cello on some cigars that have higher chances to mold like my anejos. The rest I keep in the cello simply due to my re-arranging my humi every now and then to add or remove some sticks. It gives me a little more insurance to make sure I don't damage them when I move them. Plus the cello on some of my sticks looks cool, like all of the my perdomo reserves that have red, or yellow cello. :tu

Probably... but I like to live 'dangerously'...

j/k

i let the ink dry before i put it back in the humi to reduce the amount of fumes.

lol...I'm so "anal"...that when I get the cigar home...I'd probably take the cello off...Put the cigar in my Humi..."Mark" the cello....Wait 24 hours...Then put the cello back on the cigar....:r!

Sure, cellophane is a barrier -- but my point is that it is not an airtight one as many people seem to associate with plastics. Also not all cellophanes are created equal, the permeability of cellophane depends on a number of factors. In general, if the cellophane is more "plastic" (meaning it is less rigid), then it will be less permeable (due to the processed used to achieve this plasticity).

That's one other nice thing about cellophane though. It will keep your cigars more stable in terms of RH. While it will breath, it will tend to protect cigars from being over-humidified too quickly, and also protect them from drying out too quickly.

I did an experiment years ago where I took two cellophane'd cigars out of my humidor, then I took the cello off of one of them, and let them both sit for a day or so in very dry winter air. The cigar out of cello dried out much quicker, as you might expect.

It works both ways, though. Expose those same two cigars to very humid air, and the cellophane'd cigar would also soak up the moisture slower. This is exactly what you'd want, something that would regular the effect of moisture on a cigar.

And whoever told you such things as you have heard (which sound like they might've come from a "real life" person rather than all of us fake internet people) is silly! But don't tell 'em we said that.

Yesterday I came across a little book of etiquette, quotes and advice that was written by CA's Shanken. Guess what? He says not to let cigars touch and use a divider. So it seems alot of folks have taken Mr. Shanken's advice as gospel. Not unlike thier cigar ratings. :BS

This thread made me feel like an idiot... a friend once told me to always remove the cello, so every cigar in my humidor is currently naked. Including the really, really nice ones my wife gets me on special occasions that I save for equally special occasions... they're in there marrying with my $20-a-bundle Joe Cigar specials. Lovely.

I am a diehard ..NO TOUCHING...smoker.
Seems that there's more dissension on TOUCHING than I would have thought.

I'd like to see what some more of you think about touching.
NCRadioMan was nice enough to answer me in this thread of a lovely Humi...
Go here to see the pics...lovely...and be horrified like me with TOUCHING
:)

I always take off the cellophane and if the cigars have a cedar wrap I take it off also. I like my cigars naked!! I never let different cigars touch each other. I cut strips of cedar from the dividers you get in boxes and place them between the cigars. I'll show you a small example of my OCD.... here are some old pictures of my tuperdor:

Here was the top row. Notice the cedar strips dividing the different cigars and the cedar divider separating the rows.
