Kids and smoking

I'm going to have to try it.

Never smoked one before, but my smoker could handle two medium sized kids. They are easily obtainable this time of year too. Small herds of them pass in front of my house in the early morning and again in mid-afternoon. It's like clockwork I say, clockwork.

Probably use Almond wood as I have a lot of that.

:r Yeah, gotta be careful with subject lines. I know lots of kids I'd like to smoke with a paddle! It'd do them good.

It'll be their decision to make. My mother smoked 2 packs a day of cigarettes while I was growing up and I really only had a short run in with cigarettes. It wasn't from her it was my friends influence.

The cigars I picked up on my own but my grandfather did smoke stogies. I don't have any kids yet but when they're old enough and want to have a cigar with the old man go on ahead its your life enjoy it.

Friends can be a bad influence can't they. :D When I was a kid, no one in my family smoked. But then, I got married and met KASR and DUCK. They were horrible influences on me. :r

When I was younger (I'm 18 now), I detested smoking. I have since loosened up around it. Of course, my generation was taught from day one that smoking is an incomprehensibly evil thing. My grandfather passed away from lung cancer, so I experienced the harm of cigarettes firsthand. I hated it when my dad smoked, even though he did it rarely and away from us. This was all with cigarettes.

I still do not care for cigarettes much, but I really enjoy cigars. If I'm gonna smoke something, it's gonna be quality, flavorful, and relaxing. Nothing wrong with smoking something for enjoyment. Addiction is another issue.

I have two boys (6 & 9) and while I rarely smoke cigars in their presence they do know that I smoke them. I made it a point to explain to them the difference between cigars/pipes and cigarettes. And there is a huge a difference between smoking an all natural product and one that is full of chemicals, designed to be addictive, and meant to be inhaled.

And like others have already said the idea of moderation is key. I think there's no finer example you can set for your kids than to show them that a responsible adult can enjoy these so-called vices in moderation. My dad enjoyed the occasional pipe and drink but never to excess and that did more to steer me in the right direction than any bludgeoning public service message.

I have two little ones. A daughter who is 6 and a son who is 4. Right now I do not smoke around them as they are two young to make a decision as to whether they want to be around Dad when I smoke. In a few years then they can decide on their own.

Do they know if I smoke I think so as I do come home every once in a while smelling of smoke.

Well, it happens all the time and again I get drilled today. I have a 4 year-old daughter that acts as though she's 10. Since the cold is moving in, I moved my chair and other smoking amenities to the garage and naturally she was in tow. I'm enjoying a Partagas CC (thanks to a fellow BOTL) and she sits in front of the heater telling me that cigar smoking is going to kill me, as she asks for me to blow smoke rings. Yes, we have drilled that into her, "don't smoke and don't ever try it, it's very bad." Sadly enough I smoke cigars and grandma smokes cigarettes. It's tough saying 'do as I say and not as I do'. I was raised the same way, my mom smoked (grandma) and she dared me to ever smoke. I feel hippocritical; I'm trying to be a good dad and I'm also trying to enjoy a delicious smoke. I don't think there is a way to win this battle...life...

That's a tough one... Smoke once she goes to sleep:ss

My grandfather smoked cigarettes in private I never knew he smoked as a child because he simply refused to smoke in front of us, though I did find out later in his life. He died of cancer but that never stopped me from smoking. I saw him die of cancer and his five brothers die from cancer because they smoked and I still picked up a cigarette.. guess we as humans are stupid like that we see all that unfold before us but are helpless against what we desire.

Hey - Aaron and I resemble that remark! We are so glad you jumped on board with us! You know you are our #1 best friend! teehee!

This has been great to read. I have a son on the way, I have already thought about how I was going to handle it, but this is very interesting.

I have the same problem, but I explained it to my son the same way I have explained it to other people that chastise me. I agree that there is some risk in smoking cigars but it is not as big a risk as there is with smoking cigarettes because of the inhalation factor. Also, I don't tend to chomp my cigar or keep it in my mouth for the duration of the smoke, so the potential for oral cancer is somewhat reduced, I believe. However, I readily admit that the pasttime is not without risk but I believe the benefits I receive from it far outweigh the risks.

I know where you're coming from. My daughter is 9 and she's forever getting on my case. What my wife and I have drilled into her is that life is choices and you must live with the consequences of those choices. I choose to smoke cigars and live (or not if you listen to my wife) with whatever comes from it. She will have to make the same choice when she is older. It isn't perfect but it makes it a little more real for her.

We try to explain to them that alcohol, cigars, and certain foods like candy should all be enjoyed in moderation .
Concur! :tu

I just don't see this being an issue and definitely not being a hypocrite. You're surely not going to let your child drive a car just because they see you doing it. Explain that the abuse of many things can be bad for you and being an adult you make the decisions of what you do. They can drive at 16, smoke & vote at 18, and drink at 21. No reason to have an agruement about. I don't intentionally smoke a cigar or drink too much in front of my son, but if I do I do and that's just a pleasure I have since I'm not 2yrs old.

To tell you the truth I'd feel like I was deceiving them if I hid everything from them. And I'd prefer to be the person they ask questions to other then their peers.

now from the old timer lol. have a thirty yr old daughter that was arround dam and mom who smoked cigaretts for thirty yrs. she is so far fine and doesnt smoke. dad gave up cigaretts ten yrs ago and smokes cigars for over five yrs. people say your going to get cancer. i tell them your right ive fought cancer twice in my life now. they say see the smoking got you right. i tell them you jumped to the wrong reason because it was prostate cancer. that floors them and they dont know what to say lol. so to you younger dads just do the best you can and enjoy life and your family every day and screw what the other people say.

I have a 8 and 10 year old. They ask me about smoking since all they hear is how bad smoking anything anytime is the embodiment of all that is evil in the world. I tell them that smoking cigarettes is the most disgusting and potentially harmful thing anyone could do. I smoked cigarettes for 20 years and gave it up. I tell them that if I ever see them with a cigarette I will seriously kick their ass.

I differentiate cigars. I explain I usually have one, may be 2 a day. I do not inhale cigars. Just draw it in and blow it out for the tests (to simplify). Could be some risks, but honestly not very risky at all so there is nothing worry about. And, if they want to try cigars their not allowed until their 30. If they have any problems they can start making the money, paying the mortgage, taking care of the house, do the cleaning, buy the food, cleaning the clothes.

They're kids, and they'll do what I did. Do as you're told and mind your business. We'll talk when they're in my shoes.

I am yet to be a father (but trying :ss ) and this is great stuff. I think as a future parent, medical professional, and certified teacher that differentiating cigars and other forms of tobacco is an important step. Kids can reason, allowing them to make their own decision eventually is also important. My dad never smoked in front of me, and when he did catch me smoking under age we sat down and he voiced his concerns, but he did not punish or judge, he treated me like an adult. Now obviously age plays a part in how much wiggle room you have but i am impressed (for the most part) with how you guys handle a very tough situation, I only hope i can be as smooth when it is my turn!!!

JJ, don't beat yourself up. Explain that it is an adult activity and that while it is bad for your health, it is also something that I enjoy very much. All things in moderation. To eat too much can also have a harmful effect on your life, just as drinking to excess.

I won't throw rocks and tell my children no, but I will express why they should not take up the habit. If I had my choice, I would rather see my children smoke in moderation then drink and drive. <--- The last item is BAD very BAD!!!
