Large Ring Guage

I know what you mean, I'm a big guy too and I feel I look ridiculous smoking a cigar that doesnt "fit my look", however that doesnt stop me from trying different sizes.

Generally speaking, I prefer to smoke torpedos/pyramids which are about a 52-55 RG, but at the same time I have smoked and enjoyed very much the Tat Brown & Red labels which I believe are a 42 RG.

Perhaps, but that is were the concentrated blend comes into play. In a smaller rg cigar you are smoking less filler, more wrapper and concentrated blend per draw.



BTW, I am big guy too and I could care less about how I look smoking a small rg cigar because they are so dang good! :ss Nothing over 54 for me and the ones 52/54 are very rare for me. To me somebody that has a huge rg cigar in thier mouth looks more uncomfortable than anything.

I don't care how I look with a cigar. I'm just as goofy looking without a cigar as I am with a cigar so it doesn't matter to me! :ss I like around 50-52 RG or smaller.

I dunno. What you are saying makes sense, I guess, but I have had the opposite results. When I go to a smaller rg it just seems like there is less flavor.

That's a good thing. If we were all alike, this would be a very boring place. I'm glad they make all kinds of sizes for every taste. :tu
 
While I've smoked 60'ish cigars and liked them they just aren't a staple in my humi. I prefer a robusto 50-52 overall and have grown to love lanceros. If you shun the thin RG because you do not feel it makes you look like the fat-cat in the eyes of on-lookers you are really missing out. Most of my time is with a robusto, but if I really want to kick back and have a great smoking experience I'm hoping to find a thin RG in the humi.
 
La Gloria Series R #7 was my #1 cigar. I like larger ring gauges. My new fav is the Juan Lopez Epicure #1 which is 6 x 54. It is an awesome cigar. I prefer rg form 50 on up. Used to smoke the RyJ cedro #2 which is in the 30's I believe.Not bad at all just doesn't last long enough for me. I guess it depends on what I am doing and how long I have to smoke.
 
i was strictly a 50 ring guage and up guy until Smokinape sent me a petite corona that blew my socks off, now i will smoke any and everything that is natural wrapper, and long filler...if it tastes yummy it tastes yummy!

Ok, I am about to reveal the Math nerd in me.

Basically it breaks down to ratio like our friend said

Area of the Wrapper = Circumference times the height
Area of the filler = Height times (radius squared times pi)

So on a 5x40 corona:
wrapper area = 5x40/64 x pi = 9.8125 Square inches
filler area = 5x(40/64 div by 2)squared x pi = 1.53 Cubic Inches

ratio 9.8:1.5 or 6.53

versus a 5x54 belicoso
wrapper area = 5x54/64 x pi = 13.24
filler area = 5x(54/64 div by 2)squared x pi = 2.79 cubic inches

ratio 13.2 : 2.79 or 4.74

So on the smaller corona the ratio is 27% higher of Wrapper to filler
 
I guess I would have to say I like medium ~~ 48 ring gauge cigars. Too large and I don't feel comfortable smoking them. But if they are too small ~~ 40 ring gauge then they really don't have enough flavor to satisfy me. Als I have noticed that smaller ring gauge cigars tend to have more tunneling problems than larger ring gauge ones.
 
I don't like to smoke cigars over 52rg. I like to stay with 50rg or smaller, my favorites being in the 42 range. Anything in the 54-60 I try to avoid.
 
I personally like the 50-54, but sometimes venture higher or lower depending on the flavor Im looking for. Some of the smaller gauges are tasty, but I too feel a little funny smoking them (6'3 300lbs). For a Tat Black or Hermosos, I make an exception though.:D My favorite size is the 54x5.5 which my current go to 601 Green comes in. Perfect size and balance IMO.

:tpd:When I was more noobish than I am now, I also liked a nice fat Torpedo or other 50+ rg smokes. But as part of my evolution in the jungle I came to enjoy the distinct flavor profiles that seemed to be enhanced by the smaller RG's. This seems especially true on the Dark Side. PC's, Corona's and Demi Coronas seem to dominate production. They are like little flavor bombs!

I still enjoy a 50+ once in a while but for the most part I am luvin the skinny stuff!:ss
 
I too was into larger RG's when i first started out but now i much prefer 50 and under. I'll even go the 30's. When i see people smoke cigars with a RG over 50, it looks like they're practicing to smoke something else (something that rhymes with stick :hn)
 
Im pretty much a robusto guy but will say that I love large ring guage short cigars...Ill pretty much smoke anything though:tu
 
I am a huge fan of small RG cigars. I think the smallest I have right now is a 6.5x38 panatella :D All the same, while I don't go for the 6x60 jawbreakers I do love a good diadema now and again. The Camacho havana diadema in particular is a fantastic smoke IMHO. I do like the smooth, cool smoke that comes from a large RG, but without a tapered head it just feels uncomfortable to me.
 
50rg is as large as I'll go in most cases. I like the 45-48rg zone - big fan of the Corona [Gorda] and the Churchill. It's just uncomfortable and awkward to hold and suck on anything larger than 50rg.

I'm going to go to my B&M to get me, just for the sake of having one, a Puros Indios Indio Chief - 18" x 66rg

It's kickass.
