Message from Ernesto Padilla

Miami

Gorilla
I spoke to Ernesto yesterday on the phone. He has been very busy lately but wanted me to pass on this message to all CS members. His sole purpose for spliting with Pepin is to have total control over the quality of cigars he is putting out. This will ensure not only what we have come to expect from him but an even finer cigar.

He will start with five cuban rollers right on SW 8 ST in Miami and produce cigars the only way he knows how by over seeing all aspects of the operation. He also told me that he has a few surprises in store for us.

He is going to have a grand opening soon. I will do my best to get the date as soon as I can. I hope this helps.

Take care,
Dan

Thanks for the update Dan. I know many of the primates will be lining up to buy once he has production up and running. Can't wait!:dr

Please post.
Those of us in South Florida, like me, would be interested in attending.

This seems strange to me since I never noticed any quality issues with the cigars Garcia was rolling for him or any other clients. As hot as Garcia is right now, I can't see anyone willingly separating themselves from him. As I posted in another thread relating to this, there must be more going on than what is being relayed here.

I do wish him the best of luck with his new factory though. Mostly because the 8&11 and the 1932 are two of my favorite cigars.

I also find this strange. If by splitting with Pepin will make them better, that implies Pepin is somehow hurting their quality.

Could be just being PC in the statement, but I still think this is odd.

I have heard from another distributor of Pepin blended cigars that Pepin sure can make a great cigar, but struggles with things such as banding, boxing, etc.

If Pepin is in charge of boxing Padillas and the recent problem having the 1932 overruns for Holts because of a lack of boxes, I would think those type of things may have hurt the relationshiop. But, it may just be the production Pepin needs for his other blends, or maybe a little of both.

Dennis - that makes sense.

There are many components to making & selling a successful brand.
It could be something outside of the actual cigars themselves.

Thanks for giving us the latest Danny.
South Florida Crew should have a herf at the grand opening?

P.S. I still have that millennium you gave me, waiting for the right time. :D

'not sure why everybody assumes that Padilla's can not be made and made well without Pepin being involved. Sure, ....I won't deny Pepin's got the hottest hand in the businness right now- and I love every smoke he takes part in constructing to the nub!- but let's not jump to non-optimistic conclusions so quickly.
The new Padilla's could be just as good as the the current cigars and maybe even better.
Remember, this will be a crucial test for E. Padilla's reputation- I doubt things will not be handled with the utmost & absolute careful consideration for every aspect of the new Padilla cigars.

Good Luck Ernesto!!!!

Dan, thank you for the update and good news.:tu

Now that Ernesto's cutting ties with Pepin, it would be nice to see if he could put a new spin on Miami made cigars. So many cigars coming out of there seem to taste the same, atleast to me.

The real question to me is blend.
I find the 8/11 to be a very unique blend, closest to a CC in my mind, especially the corona.
Is the blend going to change? If not, then who cares, not like DP was rolling any of the cigars himself.

Maybe with the split, the prices will become more reasonable? Seems like anything associated with Pepin is outrageously high.

Definitely would say there is more than meets the eye here. It's not just a simple, "I'm going to improve quality so hence the Pepin split". Most likely it's a $s issue. Perhaps Padilla wasn't happy with the price he was being charged for the rolling, blending etc.. Anyhow I believe Padilla can get other rollers. The only question is on the blending front. That is where I believe Pepin is a wizard. Might be tough to replicate that going fwd with new sticks. We'll see. I've been a fan of the Padilla so keep our fingers crossed.
