Milkshake smokes ?

Gorden Gecko

Newbie in the jungle
As a long time reader of this forum just wanted to say Hi to everyone. And also vent about something. I have been smoking about ten years now and it just seems like more and more lately I have been getting smokes that are just too tight or just plugged . Just got a box of CAO GOL's First 5 out the box are like pulling on a thick milkshake . Veins popping out of my head is not a sign of a good draw . Nothing makes me more angry . Smoked alot of brands over the years and just can't belive making a quality smoke the same all the time can be this hard.
Anyone else feel my pain ???

Greetings and salutations. CAO prides themselves on draw testing each and every cigar. Once you have settled into the community I suggest that you pose your predicament concerning the GOLs to the CAO rep on Meet the Manufacturer Forum.

Don't hurt yourself in the mean time. :) At least you are not getting the dreaded "Brain Freeze" :tu

I got some Cuabas and had the same condition - I mentioned it to a buddy and got a long winded story of how his grandfather used to always have a pin to open up his cigars with...

I have to agree with you but think the the transport has more to do with it honestly.

Same here; had an 8" flor de olivia (i think that's what it was) last weekend while driving out of state, it was like trying to pull a strawberry thru the straw; it was a smooth smoke, but definitely not worth the effort it took to try to smoke it. Cut a carolina cigar co. smoke yesterday on another drive, and when I tested it before lighting it up, it was very reminencent on the draw from the flor de olivia, so I didn't even bother to light it up. Gonna have to get a draw poker somewhere myself.

I have found that storing my sticks at 65% RH has helped with a lot of the draw problems......but I do agree there seems to be more sticks rolled too tight the last couple of years.

I keep a set of Henry's Cigar Tools right next to my smoking chair. Once you get the hang of using them they are very effective at opening up a poorly drawing cigar.

Henry's Cigar Tools can be purchased here:

I too keep my RH at 65% and use all the poker tools . I guess I just feel at $5.00 a stick.... should we all be working this hard to enjoy something ?? I guess it's just part of life ....and I sure as hell aint quiting smoking ,so I will stop bitchen now :D

Say Mark, do you ( or anyone) happen to know the gauge of that draw poker wire?

TIA!

I don't know the gauge.....or have anything to correctly measure it with, but when laid on a ruler it is about 1/16" wide and is very rigid with a chisel shaped head.

I have noticed more of mine have a tighter draw after letting the RH creep up above 70% this winter (due to overzealously adding water to the RH beads.) :hn Smokability has changed dramatically after going up from 65 to 70+! While I'm restabilizing the cooler to around 67%, I have been using an old fashioned wooden handled ice pick to open up the tightness. :D Works pretty good; ice pick makes an effective poker.

Having a cigar that wont draw or one the draw is to tight on just stinks. Nothing more disapointing than having to work a cigar, for no smoke.

As others suggested, try lowering the humidity a little, just letting them sit out of the humi for a day or two before smoking may help.

How quickly out of the box did you smoke those first five, perhaps you just needed to let them rest for a week or two and let them stabilize? Just throwing out ideas...

This probably sounds pretty redneckish for this forum, but I was smoking an aged El Rey del Mundo that had been in the humidor for quite some time. It was tasting great, but was a pain in the ass to smoke. I didn't want to toss a cigar I had aged for over two years, so I did what any redneck would do...I stuck my pocket knife in there about an inch or so. It worked like a charm! I have also been known to use a little phillips screwdriver as well. I'm sure a "store-bought" poker is the way to go, but you can definitely improvise while you're waiting for the UPS man to deliver it.

GET A HENRY"S.....I heard he is not doing them anymore after the beginning of this year...I just ordered one from heartfelt.

I find that some cigars don't draw well using a punch. I find Fuentes draw better using a cutter. Some brands are tighter or looser rolled than others.I think the padron X000 series are very loose and a punch works well on those. mIf you are using a punch try a cutter on brands you think have tight draw.

I always chock it up to training day at the factory when I get these.

You know there is some over zealous kid trying to impress the boss by rolling a super tight stogie.
