Mold and Smokeability?

Hi all,

Today I stopped by a local B&M who had been saving some cedar boxes for me ( for my new coolerdor).

I bought an AF Grand Reserva for a driving smoke, but he told me he could give me a deal on some LGC Serie 5's. Upon inspection, these were pretty seriously moldy! He mentioned their humidor had been higher than normal, but it made me wonder about the other smokes in there.

To make a long story short, he gave me a free LGC to try, which i did.

Yuk! Was it psychological or do moldy smokes taste crappy! I really wanted to try the LGC, but there was definetely a strange after taste and it was wet and hard to keep lit

This was moldy on the foot and on the sides.

Does this affect taste, or was i just creeped out?

NFG if it has hit the foot! If it is on the wrapper, just wipe it before smoking... :ss

I was just at a local B&M today myself and mentioned to the owner that she had some mold on her cigars. She told me it was plume. There was NO WAY it was plume. It was in clumps, raised, fuzzy. It was MOLD. This is the second time I have found mold there. The only reason I went is the other B&M I frequent does not carry reasonably priced hygrometers and I wanted to buy one for my neighbor who keeps his expensive cuban cigars in a plastic bag with a little humipak, or in the fridge.

Anyway, I still bought a little JDN antono 1970 to smoke in the car. I inspected it well...no mold that I could see. But it was definitely wet...kept going out. I think it would be an awesome little cigar if it were stored properly, great for about 30-45 min smoke!

Had the same discussion with my B&M manager a couple weeks ago. Ok, so maybe it was that box I was looking at. Went back the other day and one of those 'plumed' cigars had more 'plume' on it and I noticed more in other places in the humi. I think I'll be shopping somewhere else for a while until it either gets completely fuzzed over or cleaned up. I don't like the idea of bringing home spores.

I smoked a cigar with mold in the foot out of a shipment of 4 boxes of LGC's that were moldy (thanks a bunch, JRs) that gave me a mild type of asthmatic reaction that lasted about 2 weeks. That's two weeks without a cigar!!! I really thought I'd done some permanent damage to my lungs.

I can't believe all of the instances of B&M's claiming plume instead of mold that I've read about on Club Stogie. They're either totally clueless or dishonest when it comes to acknowledging mold problems in their humidors.

Same with my local B&M. I was eying some Tatuajes while my cousin and I were in there and owner said "wow look at all that bloom".

My cousin and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. We didnt buy anything and when we left said we'd never seen bloom thats blue and fuzzy.

What a jackoff.

Surely some of these B/M owners must know that cigars dont develope plume in a matter of months.

My understanding is plume can take years to develope, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, can Plume develope in a short period of time?

i think some of these B/M know there selling mold.

I found a B/M with a box of Anejo Sharks, this box had mold on them as soon as the box was opened, I told the owner about it, so he marked them down to 7.99 a stick, I picked through the box yesterday found a couple with just a couple spots, so I grabbed 2 wipped them off and will be smoking Sharks during the Superbowl this weekend... 8 dollar sharks :ss, I'll smoke a couple. I just appreciate the fact that the store didnt try and deny the cigars had mold, and pass it off as plume.

I smoke an Anjo (sp?) this weekend that had a little mold on the wrapper. I wiped off as much as would come off. I couldn't taste anything. I agree with everyone else though, I would pass on a stick that had it in the filler.
