mold??

I just picked up 5 anejos form my b&m. took them home and was ready to fire one of them up. It had white spots which looked like mold on it. I called my guy at the b&m and he said its fine just wipe it off and that it tends to happen with anejos. So first off is that true and second can i get sick or harm myself by smoking these babies. Side note since i have wiped away the white spots "mold" it hasn't returned.

true and i'd just wipe em down and light em up. there's speculation that the higher sugar content in the wrappers cause the mold.

Unfortunately, many have had similar experiences with mold on anejos. A few recent threads:

As long as the mold was only on the wrapper you should be fine. If it is on the foot there is really no way to tell how far into the filler it goes; some folks clip the foot and smoke up if it looks clean (I've done it), others return or trash them.

Had a couple with mold recently. Nothing major, just a spot or two. On the wrapper I just wiped it off, smoked like dream. On the foot, throw em' out.

It's just an Anejo thang I guess.

if you plan on keeping them around and don't want it to pop back up, you can wipe them down with a mix of white vinegar and water. should keep the mold away and it won't affect the taste of your smokes.

Your cigar guy was right on. This is called plume and is "ABSOLUTLY HARMLESS" just wipe it off and enjoy. This is actually a sign that the cigar is well humidified and is natural as the cigar ages. This does not apply to anything green or blue you see, or anything actually growing into the wrapper of the cigar. Small White spots occure all the time especially on darker cigars, i actually prefer a maduro that has plume on it myself.

yeah ... um ... actually ... that's not what the OP said his B&M guy told him. sounds like he agreed it was mold and to just wipe it off (which, incidentally, is the right advice, IMHO).

plume is an entirely different beast. for a nice side-by-side, check out the vitolas.net page on the subject:

there are a couple of other pages over there ... just run a search for "mold" and a search for "plume" -- you'll find them. :D

i guess it doesnt really matter since there is no pictures to judge from. i was simply judging from the fact that most of the customers that come into the store and complain of "mold" actually have plume.

Spoken like a true B+M owner/employee. Mold can be white. In fact, plume isn't really even white, it's more crystal like. As moki's site puts it, it's almost like stripper's glitter.

Can anyone verify this statement? Will this mixture applied to cigars truly not affect the taste? Will it also prevent mold?

I would NOT wipe a cigar with vinegar. Wipe the cigars off and they should be fine. If the conditions in your humidor are good for mold, it will grow. Believe me, the spores are there...

Plume does not happen "all the time". I suppose you also tell your customers that "if it wipes off easily, then it was plume"? 99% of what retailers call "plume" is mold. A well known and respected tobacconist has demonstrated that plume can occur during shipping if the cigars are warmed and then quickly cooled (real plume, as in crystalized oils), so it's not a reliable indicator of proper storage.

Yes indeed. Happened to me recently at a B&M while going through their super premium humi (anything $15 or more). The entire tray of LG was fuzzy. I told the cute little girl at the counter, and she took that standard old line, with great disdain towards me and my ignorance. A couple weeks later they had all been removed. It's a damn shame too cause they were the oiliest sticks I have ever seen.

Could be happening to me personally soon based off the recent mold thread.:confused::mad:

Hmm I think I will have to do some field research and bring some cigars to my local gentlemen's club to do an in person comparison. :ss

I don't know for sure what caused the rash of mold. All I know is that I have had several that only molded under the cedar sleves. Now the first thing that I do when I get them home is to slip off the sleves and put them back into the cello. I have never had a problem since.
