My fault vs Their fault

Any time I get an uneven burn or a poor draw I wonder, is it the construction or my storage or the environment which is at fault?

Are there any issues which can always be attributed to either of these or is it an unanswerable question when something goes awry?

It could be either. You can feel around the cigar and see if there are any knots or tight spots that would restrict the draw, check especially around the head, as this is where I find that most of mine are too tight. However, if there are no hard spots they may be too most, causing them to swell and tighten up.

There are so many things that could cause this you can never be 100% sure what it is. Anything from construction to humidification. I have also noted that some lines such as the Partagas Black, just tend to burn funny.

Thanks for posting this question, this was one that I had asked myself once a while back and was never that importantt to think of asking here. :) In my experience, I have found that I don't rotate my cigars as much when I'm smoking them to expose a different underside to the open air. I've also found a good purge seems to help as well by providing some oxygen to the burn from a direction other than the front.

Just some thigns that have helped me.

NC's typically don't have bad draws because of the draw testers the makers use. If you are having alot of them, I would think your rh is too high. I keep my smokes in the low to mid 60's and very, very rarely do I have a draw problem. By rarely, I mean less than a handfull in a year.

Could be many things. If it it usually the same brand of cigar then it is theirs usually. I have even had one big name cigar rep tell me that some of their lines may have an uneven burn because they will put emphasis on taste over burn and would rather have their customers relight than be disappointed in the taste.

Storing at a lower rh will eliminate, virtually, all burn problems. Plus the flavors "pop". At a higher rh level, the flavors get muted.

Thank you all for your answers and input. I've only had one real draw issue, out of about 70-80 smokes in the past few months, a CAO Cameroon that was really loose. I'd have to go back and check my notes but I think it was a box press. No tight draws at all.

Burn is my usual problem. I'm fighting outdoor RH in the single digits, with heat in the one-teens/one-twenties, wind, and questionable humi RHs since I'm using everything from 20-30 ct desk tops to Fuente humi-packs to zip locks. (I'll be home with my end table size humi in 7 weeks, don't have access to anything other than styrofoam coolers and can't see spending over $100 on hygrometers just for a few weeks use)

So overall, I attribute 1/2 environment and 1/2 me and was just wondering if there were any keys to look for that could really add construction issues to the lot.

Thanks again for the info guys!
